FAS6240 to 6280 swap questions

For reasons that don't require wasting any explanation, we may be swapping out our 6240 HA pair for a 6280 HA pair and we have a couple of questions on the process if anyone can help. Luckily, we have no FC connections of LUNs to worry about if that helps with some answers.

First off, is there ANY way to do this without disruption that does not involve standing up the 6280 with storage and migrating the data to it first? The docs all seem to point to the fact that this is not possible and that a complete outage to the system would be required.

If the 6280 controllers are at a lower OnTap version than the 6240 (8.1.2), do the 6280 controllers need to be upgraded before they are attached to the disk shelves or can an OnTap upgrade be done afterwards?

You do not need to migrate data, but you need downtime. Replace heads, reassign disks, clear mailbox, boot. It always makes sense to have identical versions on both old and new filers.

I am not aware of any way to do it non-disruptively in 7-Mode.

hi,

1. upgrade the new controllers to same ONTAP version, it ll avoid issues and its a 10 minute job.

2. The only thing I can come up with, and this is just a thought: if you were to "cf takeover" one of the 6240s and simulate a "controller swap" you could

in theory come up with a 6280 as a partner? I ve not seen it done but maybe ask netapp PS if they can do this.

Also, its the protocols that you serve, cifs, nfs etc, that dictate how disruptive the swap will be.

Thanks for the answers. We were able to get a PS tech to explain the options to us and there is no "supported" way to do a non-disruptive swap from 6240 to 6280. I say "supported" because I think there is technically a way to accomplish this but NetApp will not support any process that would accomplish that because there is a risk of data loss.

And yes, PS highly recommends having the OnTap version on the new controller at the same level as the current controllers so that all firmware will be supported.
