How to move data from 32bit to 64bit aggregates?

Working on a design to move a customer from a FAS2050 and FAS3020 to a consolidated 2240HA-4 with ONTAP8.1 and 64bit aggregates.  I am trying to figure out what options we have to move the data from the old 32bit aggregates to the new 64bit aggregates.

I know in ONTAP 8 we were not able to SnapMirror from a 32bit to 64bit volume, has this changed in ONTAP 8.1?  Would NDMP work or vol copy?  Thanks.

8.1 allows for 32 to 64 bit mirrors.

Scott,

What other options are there besides SnapMirror?  Looking at the config of the FAS2050 and FAS3020 they are not licensed for snapmirror like the new 2240 will be.  Thanks.

Re: How to move data from 32bit to 64bit aggregates?

I would get a demo key from NetApp and use snapmirror... without a license you can ndmpcopy but it only supports 3 dump levels 0,1,2... only 2 incrementals.

Re: How to move data from 32bit to 64bit aggregates?

I agree that VSM is probably your best bet (providing source filers are on ONTAP 7.3.x) - this will allow copying across all the data with snapshots, and incremental updates.

vol copy can be considered, as with -S option it will also transfer snapshots across - but there are no incrementals at all.

Radek

Re: How to move data from 32bit to 64bit aggregates?

Thanks guys for the insight.  It's great that 8.1 is finally in GA and snapmirror between 32bit and 64bit is now available.  I haven't read the data protection guide for 8.1 7-mode yet, any caveats with 32bit to 64bit replication?

Re: How to move data from 32bit to 64bit aggregates?

When you break the mirror the conversion starts 32 to 64 so some performance consideration until it is done. There were some bugs too so keep an eye on the Burts.
