Multiple snapshot folders appear to have identical contents

Hi environment: 2 x FAS 3240 running Data ONTAP 8.1.3 (7 mode). issue: A user decided to abort a change to a file and begin the edit again by fetching an older version of the file from a snapshot. However, when he looked in the ~snapshot folder (accessing the volume from a Windows desktop) all the versions of the file in 6 different snapshot folders (4 x hourly + 2 x daily) were the same as the latest version of the file. That is, the history appears to have been erased and the expected frozen / readonly property of snapshots does not seem to be working. We also accessed the same volume from a Linux machine via NFS and saw the same effect. I then used a new empty volume and created a file and took a snapshot (via System Manager), next changing the file and taking a further snapshot. I then repeated this twice more to give four snapshots in all of which the size of the file was clearly different (ie not at all what the user was seeing) so in this case the snapshot mechanism seems to be working 100% as expected. Any ideas, please, what could be going on or how to better diagnose the contents of the snapshot areas? Thanks! Richard.

It is not clear what "latest version" means nor when user started changing the file. So there simply is not enough facts to even start guessing.
