Passive Backplane in 2240-4

In the 2240-4. It has four power supplies. How many can you loose and can you loose both from the top or bottom. I'm wondering how the power system works internal with the passive backplane. If we loose both of the top ones will it bring down the primary controller in a dual controller system?

is this something your team handles or should this questions go to the NetApp Support Community Filer area?

Hi,

Funnily enough, I just stumbled across a slide discussing this

FAS2240-4 & Data ONTAP 8.1

- Requires 3 working PSUs to power up, reboot, or remain running

- Loss of a second PSU results in shutdown

- PDU failure also causes shutdown if FAS2240-4 connected across only two PDUs

Allegedly ONTAP 8.1.1 is expected to bring improvement, i.e. FAS2240-4 will continue to run with 2 PSUs only (but will not power up, or boot, unless 3 PSUs are working).

Regards,
Radek

So can I loose the top two and still have both controllers running?

Apparently yes (as long as we are talking about 8.1.1, not 8.1).

Hi

I see this is an old post, and i am hoping this may now have an answer.

We have 2 x FAS2240-4's in a HA pair using 8.1 7-Mode. Each rack has 2 power feeds, 2 PSU's from each device are plugged into one of the feeds.

We had an issue where we lost one PDU, both FAS2240's panicked and after 2mins, the devices shutdown.

We have looked through the release notes for all 8.x releases, and i cannot seem to find anything to suggest that this has been fixed.

Will upgrading the OnTap allow us to overcome this issue?

Thanks,

Hi James,

When you said controllers "panicked", you didn't mean the actual ONTAP panic, did you?

Are you on 8.1 RC or GA release?

This is what FAS2240 Technical FAQ (on Field Portal) says about this:

What happens if a second power supply fails on the FAS2240-4?

Answer: In Data ONTAP 8.1 RCx releases, the FAS2240-4 will shut down if a second power supply fails. Similarly, if the four PSUs on FAS2240-4 are connected across two PDUs in a cabinet and a PDU fails, the FAS2240-4 will shut down.

In Data ONTAP 8.1 GA release, the FAS2240-4 will continue to run with two working PSUs but requires three working PSUs to power up or reboot.

In Data ONTAP 8.1.1 RC1, the FAS2240-4 will continue to operate and also power up or reboot with two working PSUs.

Regards,

Radek
