Will flashpool be supported on 2040 ?

Hi,

I’ve just seen on hardware universe that the 2040 is compatible with 8.1.1 RC1

As 8.1.1 is going GA on 20th Aug I am assuming that it will be available on the 2040 too. Does this mean that flashpool will be supported on the 2040?

Thanks,

Thanks for the question biescas.  The 2040 will not support the new Flash Pools feature unfortunately.  In order to support the caching mechanism in the Flash Pool, a larger system memory footprint is required.  The max memory on a dual controller 2040 is 8GB, which would not be enough to support FP.  So you would need to look at 2220 which has 12GB per controller pair.

Thanks.

From the data sheet and preso on field portal no...  https://fieldportal.netapp.com/Core/DownloadDoc.aspx?documentID=73813&contentID=76092

Platform / Max Cache Size

FAS6280, FAS6240, V6280, V6240 12TB

FAS6210, FAS6080, FAS6070, V6210, V6080, V6070 4TB

FAS6040, FAS6030, FAS3270, FAS3170, V6040,

V6030, V3270, V3170 2TB

FAS3160, FAS3240, V3160, V3240 1TB

FAS2240-4, FAS2240-2, FAS2220 300GB

I reckon it's the same story as with Flash Cache - a system needs more than 4GB of RAM to be supported.

They told us at this years partner academy that the 2220 will be the minimum platform for FP.  Shame.

Hi Kevin - you are correct, 2220 will be the min platform for FP.  As I replied upthread, in order to support the caching mechanism in the Flash Pool, you need a larger system memory footprint.  The 2040 maxes out at 8GB, which would not be enough to support FP.  The 2220 has up to 12GB, so that's why it's the starting platform for FP.

Thanks.

Let's stop following marketing slideware & talk real memory numbers *per controller*, shall we? So FAS2040 controller has 4GB of RAM (like 3140 & 3210), whilst 2220 has 6GB of RAM (like 2240).

Radek

Radek - yes, you are correct on a per controller basis.  I should have specified that I was referring to a dual controller system in both cases, which I did in my reply to the original post on this thread (see my reply to biescas).  So we are on the same page.

Thanks

It's nothing personal

I just hate the way NetApp provides technical specification of the filers doubling everything, which in my view is (or at least may be) misleading & confusing. E.g. if you have a single workload, there is no chance you will ever use "12GB of RAM" on a FAS2220A. Not mentioning single-controller systems, which you can still buy...
