“You cannot deny the diagnosis, but you can defy the verdict.” –Adam Mellor, Sales Representative and St. Baldrick’s Event MC
With the goal of raising $150,000, NetApp employees, partners, sponsors, families, and friends went to the Iris Lounge in Tysons Corner, VA for the 4th Annual NetApp DC/Metro St. Baldrick’s event. St. Baldrick’s is a childhood cancer charity that funds pediatric cancer research.
At a St. Baldrick’s event, male and female, young and old, sit side by side and face the clippers as part of the worldwide effort of Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer. These brave shavees part with their hair not only to raise money for the cure, but also to stand in solidarity with the 160,000 children diagnosed each year with cancer worldwide. Their bald heads become walking billboards for the fight against childhood cancer. Go ahead— ask them why they are bald.
Each shavee had a story to tell as they took the stage and their hair began to fall to the floor. Whether they were shaving in memory of a child lost too soon, a brother or sister who battled with the illness, or overwhelmed by the love in the room, everyone’s participation made a real difference to the cause.
Although the inspiring courage it took for people of all ages to walk to the stage and wear the green shaving cape brought on some tears, the event was still a hopeful one filled with live music from the Petabytes, a silent auction, and a few raffles.
NetApp’s commitment to St. Baldrick’s is testament to the culture of NetApp. And this spirit of giving is contagious. All who attended stood together on behalf of kids battling this disease.
The event had one major goal in mind and that was to raise money for St. Baldrick’s. Check back next week to see how much money we raised!
