Diffrent Disk Drive Speed Mixed in an AGGR?

Dear NetApp Gurus,

Would you please share your throught on mixing up the same size but 2 different speed disk drives within an AGGR?

Thanks in advance & looking forward to hear from you.

Will work, but not considered best practice due to expected differences in future maintenance and impact to the aggregate. See posts such as : https://forums.netapp.com/thread/32673

Re: Diffrent Disk Drive Speed Mixed in an AGGR?

Whenever possible, you should use disks of the same speed in an aggregate. However, if needed, you can configure Data ONTAP to allow mixed speed aggregates based on the disk type.

To configure Data ONTAP to allow mixed speed aggregates, you use the following options:

raid.rpm.fcal.enable
raid.rpm.ata.enable

When these options are set to off, Data ONTAP allows mixing speeds for the designated disk type. By default, raid.rpm.fcal.enable is set to on, and raid.rpm.ata.enable is set to off.

Even if Data ONTAP is not configured to allow mixing speeds, you can still add disks with different speeds to an aggregate using the -f option of the aggr create or aggr add commands.
