Recommended Layout for FAS6210 Disk Upgrade

Hi everyone,

     In our environment we have a 6210 with active-active controllers that it´s using SAN and iSCSI connectivity this storage is primarily use for VMware. We recently purchased a shelf of 24 disks of 450GB SAS that are not assigned to any aggrs yet and I want to know what could be the best RG configuration for performance. The system is running ONTAP 8.0P4. The actual configuration is the following:

Aggregate aggr0 (online, raid_dp) (block checksums)
  Plex /aggr0/plex0 (online, normal, active, pool0)
    RAID group /aggr0/plex0/rg0 (normal)

looks like you already have about 12 disks per aggr. You could keep the 12-disk RG size and expand both aggrs by 12 drives each, ending with 2x 12-disk RGs in each aggr.

Or you could pick a controller to expand more than the other, and do something like:

  1. Set the RG size to 18
  2. Pad the existing RG with 6 disks, ending with 18
  3. Add the rest of the 18 disks in an additional RG
  4. Result: Aggr containing 2 RGs, 18+18 disks.
