The general consensus seems to be that Hybrid Cloud is the logical way forward for the majority of enterprises. But as the term ‘hybrid’ implies, to make everything work together seamlessly you need to have the same access and control to your data in the cloud as you have in your own data centre. This is where Cloud ONTAP comes in, which is available today for Amazon Web Services (AWS). Built on NetApp clustered Data ONTAP®, the #1 branded storage operating system*, Cloud ONTAP is a software-only storage appliance that delivers a superior universal storage management platform from your data centre to the cloud. Deployment and management of the solution is taken care of by using its no-cost sister product; OnCommand Cloud Manager.

Okay, that all sounds great, but isn’t the data then stored on completely different hardware within AWS? Yes, but the data format and management remains on ONTAP and zero-impact SnapMirror copies can be bi-directionally replicated between AWS and the on-premises data centre, as required – an approach which epitomises NetApp’s vision for the Data Fabric.
Find out how the Cordant Group is using Cloud ONTAP to replicate their physical environment into the cloud using an Opex model to deliver significant cost savings and value back to the business.
New! Cloud ONTAP 2.0
This brings me on to highlight some of the useful new features in the recently announced Cloud ONTAP 2.0 version which help make the product even more powerful and easy to consume.
For starters, we’ve added a 12 month subscription option to the previously available; 6 month and the ‘pay-as-you-go’ pricing models. Security is a hot topic in cloud, so we’ve added integration with NetApp managed encryption. Also, increased is the maximum amount of data that you can store, which moves up from 50Tb to 368Tb. And, for those customers who want to store their data at lower cost in AWS on magnetic spinning rust, 46Tb of storage capacity is now available. Plus, in response to feedback from real-life users, the 2.0 version has been re-packaged to make the purchasing and user experience easier and more intuitive. These new features expand the use cases for Cloud ONTAP beyond small environments and test/dev scenarios. The added security and capacity make it ideal for disaster recovery, as well as many other production environments.
Finally, why not put yourself behind the wheel and experience Cloud ONTAP for FREE by taking a Test Drive. Also available to try at no cost is: NetApp’s Private Storage colocation solution and NetApp AltaVault integrated backup and archive appliance. AltaVault is also available as a 90 day evaluation.
