Fact or Fiction: Containers Need No Storage?

In this new world of containers and microservices, storage might seem to lose its importance. Built to be weightless, stateless tools just megabytes in size, containers are to enable quick application launches.

 

If something is broken, we simply delete a container and create a new one.

 
While containers are in many cases storage independent, in enterprise deployment this can change dramatically. Such deployments depend heavily on data and therefor need a persistent data management.


By utilizing NetApp’s storage plug-ins, customers can transparently integrate into both worlds - whether data is needed in mode 1 or mode 2 applications. Storage plug-ins are, in fact, the most reliable and manageable option for persistent storage. NetApp works with Docker, Kubernetes, and Mesosphere to provide standard volume plug-ins to make the customer experience as smooth as possible and allow the creation, deletion and mount of persistent volumes all from within the container manager itself.

In detail, NetApp focuses on integrating storage solutions with Open Source projects like Cinder, Glance, Swift, Manila, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, OpenShift and others.
