Why size matters...

Yesterday we announced an expanded partnership with Cisco around our FlexPod Converged Infrastructure.  You can read the full details of the announcement here.

I'm excited that the announcement specifically included reference to solutions for our Service Provider Partners and the Cloud Services they're building.

FlexPod for Cloud Service Providers: To accelerate momentum in the service provider market Cisco and NetApp are developing flexible, massively scalable FlexPod solutions capable of handling multi-data-center service provider architectures. The set of solutions will bring together NetApp Clustered ONTAP™ and NetApp FAS storage systems with Cisco UCS servers and Cisco Nexus® 7000 Series Switches to create dynamically provisioned pools of server, storage and network resources that can be scaled up and scaled down by service providers depending on application requirements. These solutions will use Cisco’s Virtualized Multiservice Data Center (VMDC) architecture and will include management and orchestration solutions from Cisco and from ecosystem partners such as BMC Software and, in the future, from open source providers.

There's lots of opportunity here but, suffice to say, the main focus is on scale.  Our partners are constantly pushing the boundaries of performance, capacity, and density - at all levels of the stack - compute, network and storage. The new solutions will be designed to focus specifically on these challenges and the security and management capabilities that are needed for building enterprise-class cloud services.  In short - we find that, in fact, size does matter.  The aim is to be bigger and better than ever before!

Another point of interest is the future availability of Open Source capabilities for our Service Providers to use with FlexPod.  More details to come in a future post.  In the meantime, think of the benefits of multi-hypervisor service tiers coupled with an open source management layer combined with the highly scalable and reliable FlexPod infrastructure - a combination that is proving attractive to a number of our current partners.

Lastly, a big thanks to Simon @ Virtustream for his quote in the press release.  For more details on the cool stuff they're doing with Clustered ONTAP, check out the PDF here.
