Phil Brotherton, Vice President, NetApp Cloud Solutions provides insight into how the NetApp and Microsoft partnership has driven joint market leadership and channel success and is tightly aligned with a common Cloud OS Vision.
For more than 15 years, NetApp and Microsoft have been working together to evolve our partnership. Our partnership began at the time Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference was known as “Fusion,” an apt term for a collaboration that is focused on driving a “Better Together” vision. Based on these beginnings, it seems fitting that we announce our NetApp Private Storage for Microsoft Azure solution at WPC 2014 in Washington, DC.
A Rich History – A Winning Combination
Together, NetApp and Microsoft have worked together over the years to align our technologies, investing millions of dollars to deliver integrated solutions for customers to enjoy and partners to deliver. It is a strategy that has served both of us well – to quote one Microsoft Technical Architect “when I am in a sales situation and both NetApp and Microsoft are at the table, I know I won’t lose.” It has also contributed to making NetApp’s Data ONTAP the number one storage operating system around the world.
Cloud Vision Alignment
NetApp calls it the “Unbound Cloud.” Our overall cloud data management vision is designed around NetApp’s universal data platform, delivering non-disruptive operations, seamless scalability and proven efficiency. This vision enables NetApp storage solutions deployed with Microsoft cloud to accelerate the implementation of cloud-optimized data center infrastructure, IT services and business applications. For our customers and partners, it broadens their choices as they navigate public, private and hybrid clouds.
The Best of Cloud without the Worst of Cloud
Delivering a transformational cloud experience that is reliable and available takes planning and partnerships. For the private cloud, we have worked with Cisco to deliver an award-winning Microsoft Fast Track validated FlexPod Datacenter with Microsoft private cloud solution. For public cloud, we decided early on to partner with Equinix to deploy NetApp Private Storage for Microsoft Azure in Equinix International Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers. Why is this important? It preserves the performance, security and control of on-premises data storage while driving the cost efficiencies and scalability of on-demand computing.
Some interesting facts:
- NetApp Private Storage for Microsoft Azure doesn’t use the public internet, avoiding poor performance and privacy concerns, and, driving secure, direct connections with five milliseconds or less of latency;
- Delivers scale, savings and elasticity with the Azure pay-as-you-go model that over 55% of Fortune 500 customers love to use;
- Solves enterprise workload application needs with hybrid cloud flexibility;
- Archives data to Azure for higher reliability and faster recovery;
- Enables a cost-effective disaster recovery strategy;
- Big data analytics lets you store massive volumes of data on NetApp, while using Azure analytics to drive insight;
- Never get caught short. You can always create temporary compute capacity as needed and always on-demand.
NetApp Private Storage for Microsoft Azure in Action
In the following short video Kevin Hill demonstrates a hybrid public cloud architecture where SQL is operating in dual environments - Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure – both clusters connected to NetApp private storage. Watch how quickly the cross-cloud hand-off happens with NetApp Private Storage!”
