OpenStack becomes increasingly important as the basis for private and public cloud solutions. In fact, also enterprise customers such as SAP have a strong focus on OpenStack and engage actively in the OpenStack community. Over the past 2 years NetApp and SAP have been working together to enable enterprise applications to consume enterprise storage and its features in an OpenStack environment.
The SAP Landscape Virtualization Management (SAP LVM) development team and NetApp worked together to help integrate a Share Filesystem storage adaptor into SAP LVM that talks directly to OpenStack Manila. As part of this collaboration between NetApp, SAP and SUSE, we’ve developed a technical report that outlines the architecture and implementation decisions made during this project. Recently SAP and NetApp collaborated on an initiative to further improve Manila for enterprise applications such as SAP’s in Memory database. For those of you that have the chance to visit the OpenStack summit in Barcelona (Oct 25-28), please join the presentation “NetApp: User Stories: How SAP and BBVA run OpenStack at Enterprise Scale”, during which we talk about the goals and achievements of this joint initiative.
An example of what we will dive into during our presentation, is the initiative to enable support for Manila to use JUMBO frames (i.e. MTU size 9000) when defined for the storage network in OpenStack neutron. Depending on the HW and specifically the enterprise software, enabling Jumbo frames for accessing your storage can improve performance and throughput.
In our test environment OpenStack’s DevStack has been used to setup a landscape using neutron and Open vSwitch. The following video walks you through the step by step process of how to create a manila share-server with enabled jumbo frames.
