It went very smoothly, however one command that was listed in the Config Advisor document doesn't exist. Backup ONTAP system information

Create a backup of ONTAP 9.5P6 system information by entering the following dvadmin command:

vm config backup vm_name backup_name

The backup includes the virtual machine configuration and all information on the ONTAP 9.5P6 system
disks.

-----------------------------------------------------

The vm config backup command doesn't exist in OnTAP Select. I found some docs online that seem to indicate it existed in the earlier tool that Select replaced, called OnTAP Edge. Does anyone know what this command is replaced with in OnTAP Select, if anything?

I need to move OnTAP Deploy functionality to a new VM with a new IP address. This instance of Deploy manages a single two node OnTAP Select cluster. I've created the new VM and began the procedure outlined here:

https://kb.netapp.com/Advice_and_Troubleshooting/Data_Storage_Software/ONTAP_Select/How_to_migrate_ONTAP_Select_deploy_tool_to_a_new_VM_machine

I am to the point where I would restore the backup from the original VM to the new VM. However, a key step is missing - when do I power off the old VM to ensure a seamless transition? OR, should I expect a brief interruption of service? How will the cluster know it is being managed from a different Deploy box after the transition? To be more specific, entering storage iscsi-initiator show on the cluster shows the IP of the current Deploy box. How will it "know" to change this? Would love to hear any insight or suggestions!

Background: We recently deployed two Dell servers to serve as ESX hosts for a small office in our company. Each host has 96GB of memory, 16GB of which was reserved for an OnTAP Select node (it's a 2 node HA Pair, small size).

Despite the fact that they have 28 VMs, they use a very minimal amount of memory collectively. The Dell IDRAC memory stats show roughly 10 - 20% of memory utilization consistently. Having said that, the Host summary tab in vCenter constantly throws up "Host Memory Usage" alerts and shows that the hosts are nearly out of memory, even though iDRAC shows very little memory in use. This office wants to add a few more VMs but I was concerned about the memory allocation. After consulting with a VMware expert, we were told my analysis was correct and that since Dell showed little memory actually in use, we should be able to overcommit and add the additional VMs.

Four VMs were added and powered on. We experienced an outage in which the hosts froze up and VMs were inaccessible until we powered the new VMs off. During a second attempt in which they were powered on one at a time, a less drastic but similar problem occurred after powering on the second VM.

We have cases open with NetApp and VMware but are having trouble making headway so far. Does anyone have insight into this issue? I can't understand why we would need more physical memory, yet the symptoms seem to indicate we do. The only VMs with reservations are the OnTAP Select nodes.

I realize I will be deploying the OnTAP upgrade normally but I want to know which OnTAP version corresponds with this Deploy upgrade to get a rough idea of which one it's designed to correspond to.

The PDF below gives the answer for 2.11.1 and 2.11.2, but not .3 (the one I'm on) or .4 (the one I'm going to).

This document shows how to install Select Deploy on an Intel NUC to create a small form-factor Select Deploy appliance.

ONTAP Select Deploy is an essential tool used to create and monitor ONTAP Select clusters. Additionally, it provides a mediator service that enables high availability for two-node Select clusters. Deploy is provided as a virtual machine (VM) that runs on either the VMware ESXi or KVM hypervisors. In certain small-form-factor deployments, the hosts used forSelect do not have enough resources to run both a Select node and a Deploy VM.In those instances, an Intel NUC can be used to run Deploy as a low-cost, small-form-factor standalone appliance.

For more info, please click here

Thanks

I've been playing around with Ontap Select 9.3 for our remote branch solution.

I've been able to get it installed and running and have started my preformance testing.

Each node has an internal Intel NVME PCI-E Flash card. I've deployed the 2 node cluster using the "small" config.

I'm seeing terrible write latency....steady 200ms+ when preforming a storage vmotions. Volumes are presented as NFS like our physcal netapps are.

I can actually storage vmotion faster between two old test SATA Netapp's than I can to/from the Ontap Select w/ NVME.

Looking at the preformance graphs shows the underlying NVME datastore has sub 1ms latnecy between the Node VM and the datastore.

So it looks like the latency is within the ontap stack.

I certianly woud not expect baremetal speed. But considering we are using very fast NVME PCI-E cards I'd expect much better preformance than we are seeing.

This same gear was also used for a vSAN test and its preformance was way way higher.

So is there somthing I'm missing? I do see the virtual e0a adapters are set to 1000GB full but changing it to 10GB Full did not seem to help. These host are all connected via 40GB Mellanox switches.

I've also tried disabling dedup/compression on the volume but that did not see to any impact either.

Hey all,

I'm experimenting wiht OT Select in our lab. Today I upgraded Deploy to 2.10 to be able to use

software RAID with ESX as I have a host (former Cisco Hyperflex node) without a hardware RAID controller.

I could add the host and Deploy can get the inventory just fine.

However, when I try to create a single node cluster on the host after entering the basic cluster details

I get an error message stating

"Invalid Output: Additional properties are not allowed (u'host_uuid' was unexpected) Failed validating 'additionalProperties' in schema [..]"

At the end of the output I can see that it read the hosts UUID, however I can not proceed with creating the cluster

as there is no host in the dropdown menu to select as a destination.

Has anyone else had this problem as well? All help would be welcome.. 🙂

Cheers,

Frank

I tried to upgrade ONTAP Select from 9.6RC1 to 9.7 using System Manager using a local upload. I ran in to two issues:

1. Issue related to BugID 1223866, staging area in 9.6 is 2GB's, less than required for 9.7. Tried guidance in BUG ID to increase staging space, but the job kept hanging in state of 'running'

Also increased size of mroot and issued the staging size command as recommended in the bug notes.

Logged in via diag account, found that /mroot/etc/upload was a link to "/mroot/etc/www/webjail/php/tmp/upload/complete"; however the link pointed to a non-existent directory at the upload/complete levels. Created upload and upload/complete directories.

2. Once the above was fixed, the upload complained that it could only upload a .tgz file. The upgrade file, as downloaded from the NetApp support site, was all capitalized, in other words XXXX.TGZ. Renamed source file to all lower case letters.

The upload worked like a charm. Now to install it.
