I am resetting all local NetApp cluster passwords to upgrade the hash from MD5 to SHA512 and I am down to my last one - the local service account used by SnapDrive for the Transport Protocol Settings. We only have SnapDrive running on Windows Failover Clusters, and only for LUN management (due to a SnapCenter bug I'm awaiting a fix on). We use SnapCenter on all systems, including the ones with SnapDrive, for backups.

Within this context, is there any risk to changing the password for the service account used in the Transport Protocol Settings dialog box, and then going one system at a time to update the new password in the dialog box? I don't want to get in a situation where (a) SnapDrive tries to connect and it affects LUN functionality, and/or (b) SnapDrive tries to connect from systems I haven't updated the password for yet, and it locks out the service account.

Any recommendations?

FIrst, some background: we are migrating from SnapDrive/SMSQL to SnapCenter, however SC has numerous bugs <related to failover clusters and mount points> that requires us to keep SnapDrive (but not SMSQL) on a few servers until the bugs are patched. We are running OnTAP 9.3 because SnapDrive isn't supported in OnTAP 9.4 and above. I am aware there are special bundled versions of SnapDrive with certain SnapManager products (such as Hyper-V) that are supported in OnTAP 9.4 and above, but SMSQL isn't one of them.

Now my question: what if I installed one of the special SnapManager/SnapDrive bundled products on the SQL Servers where I need SnapDrive, and just didn't use the SnapManager component? Would that be a legitimate way to get a supported version of SnapDrive on those servers so we can upgrade to OnTAP 9.5? It would be even simpler, of course, if installing the latest SnapDrive patch as a standalone would be compatible (see below), but everything I've seen so far indicates it is not.

Would love to hear anyone's insight! Thanks in advance.

SnapDrive 7.1.5P3

https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/products/all/details/snapdrive-windows/downloads-tab/download/30049/7.1.5P3

I heard recently that some older SnapManager products such as SnapManager for Hyper-V are now coming bundled with SnapDrive 7.1.5P2 which is supposedly supported through OnTAP 9.7. I say "supposedly" because the IMT is inconsistent on this point. When looking at SnapManager for Hyper-V it shows compatibility through 9.7, but when you choose SnapDrive it still shows compatibility only through 9.3.

Why do I ask? We are currently only on OnTAP 9.3 because we haven't fully deployed SnapCenter yet, and my understanding was that SnapDrive/SMSQL are only supported through 9.3 based on the IMT. Can anyone provide clarity on this point? It would be a game-changer for my planning purposes if SnapDrive 7.1.5P2 and SMSQL 7.2.3 were now supported through OnTAP 9.7. It would not be as big of a deal if we weren't continually running into limitations, issues, and bugs in SnapCenter as we deploy it.

Hello,

I am trying to create a LUN in a Windows Failover Cluster for the first time using SnapCenter after having used SnapDrive for years. I'm running across two very confusing elements and wondered if someone could provide insight. Specifically:

In the Disk Type screen I of course select Shared Disk, but then it requires that you type in the Windows Cluster Resource Group. In SnapDrive you just selected it from a drop-down list. I'm not sure if the name should be the full name as shown in Windows Failover Cluster ("SQL Server (APPNAME)") or just the app name (APPNAME). Any ideas?

When selecting the initiators, I choose each host in the cluster and select the initiator on each host as I did before in SnapDrive. However, on the Group Type screen that follows, you can only choose one iGroup! In SnapDrive, I select Automatic which attaches the LUN to two igroups, one for each node in the cluster. I can't do that here!

I did read in NetApp documentation (below) the line "You need only create the disk on one host in the failover cluster." Does that indicate I should only connect to one of the initiators in the Map LUN screen and select the matching initiator group in the Group Type screen? If so, does the wizard automatically add mapping to the additional nodes?

Any help will be appreciated!

http://docs.netapp.com/ocsc-41/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.netapp.doc.ocsc-ag%2FGUID-7A7D7B1D-EB19-4739-BC03-BE94730FA7F5.html

Now the option to run Distributed backups is gone in the configuration wizard and I found an old document saying that it wasn't supported but that was on Windows 2012, ONTAP 8 and SnapManager 2.0.

If it still isn't supported how come I could run it for over a year before the upgrade of ONTAP?

Is there a way to activate Distributed backups by editing registry or config files? The benefit of Hyper-V cluster kind of loses its point if I can't run distributed backups.

Best regards

Joakim

HI there

I have built a Snapcenter POC environment to test out the solution before moving to production. It consists of an SC server (windows 2016 core), Netapp SIM (ontap 9.4), MS SQLServer and MS AD Server (both windows 2016 core). I can connect iscsi luns to the SQL and AD server using oncommand (via the sim) and Windows Admin Centre to manage the core servers. all works fine. windows volumes mount and are avialable for use etc Hapy Days.

When I try to do the same via snapcentre, i can build and register the iScsi path, igroup and register the hosts, but cannot create a lun or connect to an exisiting lun. I have removed all firewalls, ensured the credentials supplied are Admins or domain admins all with no joy.

on looking at the SCWDebug.log file I can see SDW is having 2 problems

1: When I try to create a LUN, it suceeds in creating, connecting and intialising the lun in the specified volume, but fails when it tries to create a volume. error is "Failed to Create windows file system at Snapdrive.NSF.Core.Host.PartitionManager.CreateWindowsFileSystem".

it then deletes the LUN and finishes. Note it does not remove the igroup so if re-run fails with a different error. which has to be corrected in ontap by removing the igroup.

2: When I try to connect to existing LUN, it applies the requested igroup, it mounts the lun and then fails with an invalid WMI Query error is System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWith ExtendedInfo(..... get.count()..... at SnapDrive.NSF.Core.Host.PartitionManager.<>c_DisplayClass13.<connectdisk>b__d(String Node). reported error is

"Task Creating Windows File system Status: Failed Message: No disk is found on all nodes".

Query is "Select * from MSFT_Partition Where DiskID = "{1}\\\\<servername>\\root/Microsoft/Storage/Providers_v2\\WSP_Disk.objectid="<Disk ID>

Scope \\<Server name>\root\Microsoft\windows\Storage.

Note the 4 \\\\ above are correct as reported in log file???? this is strange as the Disk ID reported 2 lines above only has 2\\.

This time it exits and leaves the lun mounted and ready to use from the windows server and looking good in ontap, but not registered in snapcentre, so unable to be used for backup operations. ;-(

There seems to be an issue with Snapdrive (Snapcentre for windows) creating or enumerating windows volumes on a Server core target, has anyone else experienced this or have do you have any futher pointers on things to try as I am now out of ideas.

Thanks in advance for your time and support
