VMDKs disappeared from vVol VMs during backups

We had an unusual event last week that I wanted to share. I had seven VMs on a NetApp NFS-based vVol. Our Cohesity backups kicked off at 3:01pm and by 3:04pm, the VMDK files for six of those VMs went missing (the .vmdk descriptor files were still there, but the .vmdk file containing the actual data were somehow inaccessible). All versions of software were supported per NetApp's IMT: VMware versions were 7.0U1, VSC was 9.7.1P1, ONTAP was 9.7P6, VAAI plugin was 2.0. The one remaining VM on the same vVol was undamaged, and two other VMs on a separate vVol also remained intact. We've never had trouble with Cohesity backing up hundreds of other VMs on "regular NFS" datastores and this was the first time we'd seen trouble on a vVol datastore.

We were able to restore the VMs from backups taken the previous day and with little/no data loss. I currently have ticket 2008782637 in with NetApp on how to delete the suspect vVol because vCenter won't allow it. (vCenter thinks that VMs still reside on the vVol and it's probably right - even though the old, broken VMs have been deleted, their VMDKs likely exist *somewhere* in the vVol.) The only recent change I made was that I moved one VM to the impacted vVol and two VMs off of it in the hours before the backup. (vVols had been working so well for us that I wanted to put another production VM on vVols and remove two non-production ones.)

I'll continue to use vVols, but only for test VMs for the near future.

SnapLock set unspecified retention

With ONTAP 9.8 we have introduced the "unspecified" retention time for SnapLock. The API in ONTAP is already there, any plans to have that implemented in our Powershell toolkit like we have for the infinite retention time?

Something like this:

Migration from Windows share to NetApp CIFS Share

Using PSTK 9.8 (and this was the same in 9.6) running Get-NcVolumeEncryption gives an error back to say it is unable to find the API, does anyone else have this issue? Trying to find a way of getting the encryption type of a volume, so volume or aggregate. I can get whether or not a volume is encrypted but I am wanting to know the type.

Other cmdlets work fine, just this one, I had read on a previous community post this API might have been revoked a while back but this doesn't make sure to have not been reintroduced.

Does anyone else have the same issue with the PSTK module loaded from the MS PSGallery where they get screen after screen of Green background text after each command? Looked into it and it looks like data coming from the Write-Information and Write-Debug console streams. I've checked system variables and reloaded the module twice with the same behavior. It ignores the Preference variables set in the PShost.

Snap Center Plugin for vmware vsphere - auto tagging

We have On-prem environment based on VMWare vsphere (a few ESXi hosts and VMware VCenter). We also have Snap Center plugin for vmware VCetner installed on the VCenter itself, and a dedicated server for backups (snap center server on windows os, snap center version 4.0)

Since the plugin for VCenter is installed, we can to do a simple recovery actions from snapshots (restore a single vmdk file, de-attach and attach disks, restore entire vm, etc...). Those actions automatically creats a datastore (usually named snap-<some uid>) managed by the snap center vmware 'run as account'. I will call these 'snap center datastores'

However, a regular user still can create Virtual disks on these datastores - makig it difficult to manage.

We thought create a storage policy that prevent a regular VM disks reside on Datastore generated by the snap center. For this to come out, we need to find a way to attach vmware tag to each datastore created by the snapcenter.

Is it possible to define some vmware storage tag added automatically to those datastores when they are created?

This is important for us since we have some "leftovers" - snap center datastores being kept for a long time for some research reasons.

Snapmirror Resync using PSTK

Hi there

I have a PS script to reverse resync a SnapMirror relationship which has been tested against the ontap9.5 simulator.

when running on the simulator the existing relationship remains in place (but has been previously broken) and the resync operation creates a new reverse relationship for the volumes. i.e. originally A -> B becomes B->A

when integrating into the QA test environment the controllers are running OnTap 9.1 and the resync call fails with no common snapshot in place, Note Snapmirror relationship is created but the state is Broken-off, if I try to initialize i get an error because the volume at A is RW and not DP

Were any changes made between 9.1 and 9.5 that explain this difference or am I just seeing a difference between the simulator and real world?

Toolkit not running after upgrade to 9.7 - any assistance

I used to run this command line to output my NetApp info on NetApp 9.3, I recently upgraded to 9.7 version and now this does not work.

I was given this by a support person years ago, not sure how I can get this information again. Any help would be appreciated.

So I want to combine the output from the following two cmdlets:

Get-NcLunMap | Select-Object Vserver,Path,InitiatorGroup,LunId Get-NcIgroup | Select-Object InitiatorGroupAluaEnabled,InitiatorGroupOsType,InitiatorGroupType,Initiators

I've been looking at the Don Jones video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLUzPvA0HUo&t=42s, and I think I need to create a custom object. The cmdlets in the video return a single item, e.g. for a particular computer the Win32_OperatingSystem, however Get-NcLun/Igroup returns all of the LUNs/Igroups from a cluster. I can see how the Don Jones example would work for a single item but I don't understand how to upscale that when there are multiple objects returned.

Also as an aside, is there any way I can get an online/offline status for initiators into my completed table?

As you can probably tell, I'm a novice, any thoughts please?

Virtual Storage Console Limited Use Rights

I am attempting to reduce rights to the bare minimum on local OnTAP service accounts to increase our security posture. I've created a custom role for the VSC service account that just allows for discovery, however it occurred to me that we can probably go further.

We use VSC for one single purpose only: to verify our ESX host settings match NetApp best practices. The only thing we do is browse to Overview and click Edit ESXi Host Settings when we have a new ESX host added. With this in mind: do we need an account on the cluster at all? Do we have to perform discovery if all we do is apply appropriate settings to ESX hosts? In other words: do I even need a local service account at all? Would love to hear any suggestions or thoughts!

nc-snapmirror -type DP not working as expected

However, the type continues defaulting to XDP. Is this expected?

Problems with Get-NcVol using variables

I'm having a problem and I don't understand why it's not working and I'm now wondering if I'm running into some kind of bug and was looking for some suggestions. If I try the following:-

Get-NcVol -VServer ams4-lb8020svm-01 -Name $volName

Both of these works, however if I use the following it doesn't return anything even though the variable is still of a type string:-

Netapp Voume Tagging

I try to find a way to tag netapp volumes and after it to get a report of all Volumes with Tag information as well.

In the Gui, it looks like there is no way to modify volumes with tag Information. Powershell or Netappcli ? Is there a good option to to this?

I want to get the IP address of a SVM's cifs lif into a variable and use this variable in Test-Path, but I can't work out what's happening:

I receive a 'false' even though I know the path is up and accessible. What am I doing wrong please? Is it something like the data type of the IP address? If I create a path variable the IP address details are enclosed in a hash table (?). How can I reduce it to just the IP address?

Rename CIFS Share

I want to rename a bunch of CIFS shares using the PSTK - I don't think you can technically rename a share so I am creating/deleting. I'm using the following to retrieve the current share properties that I am interested in keeping:

I'm then creating some variables to create the new share name with the existing properties:

Script to set ldaps settings

I would like to set on more than 40 netapp cluster ontap 9.5+, ldaps configuration.

So basically, we have to apply 2 commands on each cluster per svm connected to ldap for cifs purpose.

certificate install -type server-ca -vserver SVM

+ insert certificate

vserver cifs security modify -vserver SVM -use-ldaps-for-ad-ldap true

And maybe additionally to check settings have been applied

cifs server security show -vserver SVM -fields use-ldaps-for-ad-ldap

I had a look on powersheel toolkit but i don't think i can achieve this goal.

Do you have any idea to apply this configuration on multiple cluster/svm by script/automatically ?

I am looking for a way to find all the CIFS shares within NetApp with NTFS permission setup from AD levelin our environmnt in 1 go.

We couldn't find the permission 1 by1 for each share as we have n numbers of shares in the environment.

Any suggesstions or help on how could we do it from Netapp cluster mode CLI or if we could do it via Netapp powershell toolkit without impacting the busniess and cauing any latency to the environment ?

Powershell Toolkit API fails with error Cluster Admin required but cmdlet in vServer family

We use powershell to manage volumes within a Vserver creating new clones, adding snapmirrors etc etc. We have recently decided to add the volumes into a QoS Policy Group and have amended the script to apply the relevant group when performing the volume operations.

As an Example we use New-NCVolClone to create a volume clone, and have now added the -QosPolicyGroup option to the call. this commandlet is in the Vserver family, yet after adding the above option it fails with an error [

You cannot use Quality of Service (Qos) feature in Vserver Context. Qos is available to cluster administrators only.]

Can you please clarify if this a bug in the API or documentation?

It seems strange that Qos Policy Groups are defined and applied at the Vserver level, but volumes cannot be added to the group by the Vserver admin via a normally successful api call

vMotion issue when VM is on a VVOL datastore

Hi,

some time ago i installed the 9.7.1 VSC in my vSphere 7.0.1 environment and created a VVOL datastore. I migrated VM's from NFS 4.1 datastores to the VVOL datastore without problems.

But when doing a "compute" vMotion the process stuck at 85% for 30 to 40 sec. In this time the VM freezes.

I had a NetApp case open, they found nothing in the logs but told me that they currently don't support the 7.0.1 but they adon't know that there are issues in that kind, i should open a case at VMware. VMware made some research but don't found something too in the the logs.

To send this case in the next level i should bring my environment to a from VMware supported version, but in the VMware HCL the newest versions are:

ESXi 6.5 U3
VASA Provider 7.1P1 (end of support since jan 2019)
ONTAP 9.4 (end of support since jun 2019)

So VMware closes the case...

Today i updated my VSC to 9.7.1P1, but the vMotion issue is still present.

So i have an issue and can't get help!

Now the environment is supported by NetApp IMT, but this don't help when NetApp told me to open a case at VMware, and they don't help me because NetApp has missed to update the HCL at VMware.

This very very bad!!!!

NetApp PLEASE!!! Update the HCL at VMware!!!!

Get list of all folders and subfolders permissions in a netapp with millions of folders

I need to get a list of all shares and folder/subfolders along NTFS permissions (user and permission) in a netapp with millions of folders.

I know you can use this command and it will return permissions for one folder you specify

vserver security file-directory show -path /marketing -expand-mask true

But I need to do a report of a netapp that has 1 million of folders/subfolders so traversing folders and invoking this command folder by folder will take so many hours.

By now i have been doing this with standard windows APIs to list folders and subfolders and get-acl permission per folder but as i said it is too slow.

Is there any file where this info is stored or a way to query security file-directory to report all subfolders ? or other way like in windows you can use ntfs walker/journal or similar to query ntfs metada and get all file names/dir in the filesystem more efficient and quickly.

I have used powershell Ontap modules many times and it always seem to be accurate but in this case I have tried the command from two version of the powershellOntaptools and get the same result. This is the first time running it with this company.

Inherited Cluster Configuration When Adding New Nodes to Existing Cluster

Hello!

I'm looking for documentation that indicates what configuration is inherited by a new node when it is joined to an existing cluster. My scenario:

-FAS8020 HA pair is being upgraded then made into a switched cluster

-New AFF-A220 being added to cluster

-Data will be transferred off the FAS8020, then the FAS8020 will be removed from the cluster.

Just looking for how much on the introduced AFF-A220 node pair will have to be manually configure.

I have recently noticed this problem; not sure where it is coming from. SVMDR relationships appear twice in the output.

If I do 'snapmirror show' in the OnTAP CLI, I do not see any duplicates.

When I issue the PowerShell command:

Moving RDM LUNs to new storage with SnapMirror

We have a VM (vmware) with 2 RDM LUN's placed on old storage (CDOT)).

I have to move those RDM LUNs to new storage (also CDOT) with snapmirror.

Is this procedure OK?

1. shutdown VM

2. remove RDM disks on VM

3. dettach RDM LUN's on vmware

4. LUN unmap on old storage

5. snapmirror update

6. snapmirror break

7. LUN map back to vmware on new storage (do i have to use the same LUN ID?)

8. add RDM disks to VM

9. VM power on

Is this procedure OK or there is any other way? What about LUN ID's?

Hello, after relocating an SVM to a newly installed node, I can no longer connect to it with the Powershell toolkit.
Same generic error if I use -https.

Also currently having issues with snapdrive on exchange not connecting to its SVM after moving the svm to a new node. We moved the svm back to the old node as a work around for this. I have a ticket open for this.

Can't move svm-fileshares back to test if it starts working again until a maintenance day.

Any ideas?

Im trying to create volumes with a powershell script, but I cant find an option to create a volume without providing a junctionpath.

When I create a flexvol via GUI, i can assign the storagetype "SAN (Used for FC/FCoE or iSCSI or NVMe access)", which doesnt create a junctionpath for the volume.

Is there a way to create a flexvol via powershell, which doesnt need a junctionpath?

However none of the other related Invoke commands like Invoke-NcSnapmirrorBreak and Invoke-NcSnapmirrorResync have the -Query argument. This forces the script to invoke an ssh session to complete an otherwise simple process to fail over an SVMDR relationship.

The request: Please add the -Query to the remaining commands for existing snapmirror relationships.

When building an SVMDR snapmirror relationship the command New-NcSnapmirror demands that the volume names be entered. This defeats the use of an SVMDR since all volumes current and future are included automatically in such a relationship.

The request: Please add the ability to stop at the SVM level and not have to include the volumes in the current New-NcSnapmirror or create a new commandlet like New-NcSnapmirrorSVMDR

Due to security requirements we've disabled diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha256 and hmac-sha1 for ssh on ONTAP 9.7.

This makes that commandlet:InvokeSsh no longer works.

Is there a way to make InvokeSsh work with this ONTAP ssh config?

(e.g. Can we make it use another set of algorithms such as ecdh-sha2-nistp521, hmac-sha2-512?)

A Cinder volume corresponds to a file within the NFS share provided by a FlexVol.

The space is consumed when you write actual data in the Cinder volume.

ONTAP is not able to read the filesystem within the Cinder volume to tell if a block is in use or not, so removing a file inside the Cinder volume won't free space.

Only when you delete the Cinder volume, the corresponding file within the NFS share will be deleted, and the space will be reclaimed.

I have never (knock on wood) been in a situation where a source had gone down hard so I do not know what a frame would return on the MirrorState. For a while now VMWare went to vSphere version 7. What is the ETA for a new version of Virtual Storage Console for VMware vSphere and a NetApp NFS Plug-in for VMware VAAI that supports vSphere 7 ?

In a demo pool I implemented a virtual storage console on a vSphere 7. The VASA (NetApp NFS Plug-in for VMware VAAI 1.1.2) provider is installed on the ESXi hosts but showing as not being capable of hardware acceleration in the vSphere 7 client. The option to Rapid clone is not available. The virtual storage console is available and shows information inside the vSphere 7 client but there isn't much to do. It lost alot of functionality compared to vSphere 6.7 environment.

I want to create a share with "spec: revert_to_snapshot_support". after I created a new share (volume01), I saw the share status is "error". I checked the /var/log/manila/scheduler.log. I saw the NetApp Filer is reporting the "revert_to_snapshot_support': False". seems I need to enable some of the settings in NetApp to support the " revert_to_snapshot_support". VMware SRM - SRA error occurred warning

Posting this in case it assists anyone with a similar issue

We encountered an error whilst configuring VMware Site Recovery Manager. Sites fail to pair, SRM shows error "SRA error occurred" appears, without any further information. After uploading the SRA plugin to the SRM Appliance, the Storage Replication Adapters page in SRM reports the message No storage replication adapters installed.

Issue is caused by VSC Appliance Administrator password consisting special character $. (In our case we struggled to reset the VSC administrator and maint password so we had to redeploy the VSC-SRA appliance as well)

Resolution: To reset the VSC admin password to one without a '$' sign. (refer to above NetApp KB)

parent volume and cloned volume are growing like anything with out writing any data over there
i didnot see ant LUN growth no snapshot growth. even i tried spliting still eating volume space

we have volume named hyperv_vol which is cloned named as hyperv_vol_clone
2 csv LUNs are created from hyperv_vol_clone and one from hyperv_vol
but hyperv_vol and hyperv_vol_clone are utilizing more aggregate space even though there is no data written on LUNs
I have splited volume from parent its strucking and middle and consuming more aggregate space

Performance tool test for IOPS/latency

Hi,

We've just set up a new metrocluster AFF220 with 30K IOPS guarantee by NETAPP.

There is a just a few VMs that have migrated on this storage and we'd like to test IOPS and latency performance.

However, that VMs are not generating that much IOPS.

Is there any NETAPP tool to test IOPS and latency performance by generating random read/writes ad stuff like that ?

Latest PowerShell toolkit will not import the module

All I have downloaded and installed the latest PowerShell Toolkit 9.7.1. I am running PowerShell 7.0.3 and when I try to run the command Import-Module DataONTAP I get this (verbose mode):

PTK snapmirror reverse resync (C.)

Hi,

I would like to know if it's possible to perform a snapmirror reverse resync on a volume level snapmirror relationship using the PTK.

Example, lets say I have 2 clusters, A and B. A has a volume and is considered the source, B has a volume and is considered the destination of a snapmirror relationship.

All connectivity to A is unavailable, disaster, making it pretty much unusable. I know at this point I can use the Invoke-NcSnapMirrorBreak cmdlet on the relationship, which will make volume B the read/write location, whereby once redirected, users can continue to read and write to the destination.

Now, connectivity is re-established to A, however, users have been writing to volume B for sometime making it the most up to date version of data, whereby the destination is now actually considered the new source.

So, I want to perform a reverse resync of volume B, using the PTK, however, the Invoke-NcSnapMirrorResync cmdlet suggests that this would not only re-establish the snapmirror, but, would have the effect of overwriting all the new data on the volume B, replacing it with the latest snapshot copy from volume A, which at this point, is old.

I suppose what I'm really looking for is an Invoke-NcSnapmirrorReverseResync cmdlet. In the absense of such a cmdlet, how could you do this with the PTK. I can manage the scaling to multiple snapmirror relationships, but I'm missing how I can script this, it could also be that I've misunderstood the Invoke-NcSnapmirrorResync cmdlet to use it correctly in the above scenario.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My Site recovery manager failed with Storage Replication Adapter - Array Pair error: "Array Not Found"

ON SRA,

Application Service Status

VASA Provider and SRA: Not running

When I try to start the service, command failed with error message.

Job for vpserver.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status vpserver.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
Command failed.

How do I run those commands above? and with which credentials?

My environment:

vCenter 6.7

SRM 8.1

SRA 7.2.1P1

OpenStack NFS Not Responding During ONTAP Upgrade

Interesting issue we have seen during ONTAP upgrades in OSP environment. During the upgrade from 9.3 to 9.5 we have seen across multiple clusters in multiple locations random OSP compute nodes that end up with "NFS not responding" and VM's hang. Only way OSP team has found to recover is to reboot the compute nodes which impacts all VM including those still running fine. We have only seen this behavior during upgrades and only on OSP compute nodes. Other, what I will call "normal", NFS or CIFS shares for files are not impacted at all. There is even evidence that VMware datastores from NFS had no impact. Only OSP compute nodes. Other interesting fact is that we can't reproduce this in any way other than during the upgrade. We have had to do failovers for dimm replacements and did multiple tests doing manual LIF migrations and never saw a single issue. Only during the upgrade. Anyone else seen this? What did you find to be the cause?

Note: I can't share much detail on our env due to security, so I have to keep it generalized here.

How to obtain the Secondary LUN IDs when using Protocol End Points to connect to a VVol

I am trying to understand how Protocol End Points work in the context of deploying VVol Datastores over a fibrechannel SAN network. I have successfully deployed a VVol Datastore on my FAS-8040 using the VASA Provider with the required storage profiles for my testing. I was also able to create a VM and added that to the VVol Datastore, after associating the storage policies of its files to the created VVol datastore. When I power on the VM and analyze the trace captures, I see that all the communication happens only to the PE LUN, which I believe is correctly working. But, I was curious to know how the ESX Hosts learn about the other Sub LUNs for the metadata(config), vmdk and the swap LUNs created inside the Virtual Volume. More importantly, I was curious to know if the ESX Hosts learn about the Sub or the Secondary LUN Ids. From the screenshots placed below, the vmdk LUNs do not appear to have a LUN ID which is also confusing to me, since I thought there a binding of the Secondary LUN ID to a Protocol End Point LUN. Where can I find the Secondary LUN ID to PE binding using CLI or system Manager?

Also, as part of my investigation, on one of the Inquiry exchanges to the PE LUN, I see that the VPD contains a LUN with the SCSI name "naa.600A0980383035694F2B495A67654356". This has also been attached in the screenshots below. However, when I look up the available LUNs through system manager, I dont see this LUN listed in the vServer that hosts my VVols. I was curious to know what this LUN could be be. Lastly, I was also interested to know how do the ESX Hosts bind to the vmdk LUNs, if they dont send any Report LUNs or Inquiry commands to these LUNs. I would really appreciate your feedback with this.

Can NetAppDocs be enhanced to include FabricPool ObjectStore data at the volume level?

I can see that the ObjectStore is accounted for in NetAppDocs under AggregateDataStores, but I don't see volume foot-print data being captured on the volume side or at least fully. This is important if you are trying to track where your FabricPool data is coming from and would be invaluable if you could add to NetAppDocs.

The command you would use at the CLI to get the data is:

volume show-footprint -aggregate <aggr>

The output is as follows:

how to avoid suprise removal of disk on host when using remove-nclunmap

Hey guys,

I am currently working on a powershell module which would kinda give the same functionality that snapdrive would give us for lun management. (snapcenter would be a better option but this is not something which we have in place anyway).

Now, I have run into a problem where at a certain point i just want to disconnect a lun by using the powershell toolkit . I am using remove-nclunmap for this but this ofcourse has the effect that my host suddenly looses its connection to that particular disk.

And well, the host is not that happy about it as it seems that no diskrelated diskcommando's are possible untill the host validates the suprise removal of the disk.

I have also made sure that the volume is first dismounted from the system before removing the lunmap, but he keeps giving me a delay of 1-2 minutes before i can actually procceed with doing anything diskrelated.

Do you guys have an idea how to actually solve this problem?

SnapCenter Plugin for Windows 4.1.1 Cant Edit Schedule

Running NetApp Snapcenter Server 4.2.1 and under host option on the right panel I have my host running NetApp SnapCenter Plugin for Windows 4.1.1.

All my storage systems are added as well but the host running the Plugin for Windows only manages a few of the storage systems. On a regular SnapCenter Plugin for VMware I can easily change the schedule under the resource group and schedules. However since some of my storage systems are managed by this windows version of SnapCenter Center, I cant find where to edit the schedule for those.

Below is a snip of the monitor schedule, which is the only place where I can actually see something relatable to schedule but it wont let me change anything.

I ran out of ideas thus seeking for help.

connect-nccontroller without password prompt

I'm trying to run a script (exporting shares etc.) without a password promt.

Our CVO 9.5P10 is domain joined and the user the powershell session is running with is set as admin on clust and svm level.

Is there a way to use the user of the Powershell session to do the login without storing the password somewhere and without having a password prompt?

I tried multiple things, e.g.

I have 2 questions.

1) Copy offload from Glance FlexVol to Cinder FlexVol was not working in my customer environment and my test environment.

- Test env: glance_vol and cinder_vol#1 are on the same node. And cinder_vol#2 is on the other node.

- Test#1: Creating nova with an image on glance_vol to cinder_vol#1 using copy offload failed. The Image was copied using regular downloading and registered in cache in cinder_vol#1.

- Test#2: Creating nova with the same image above to cinder_vol#2 using copy offload seemed successful. Cached image in cinder_vol#1 was copied to cinder_vol#2 using copy offload via cluster network.

- I configured copy offload tool following below guide

- Is there anywhere in configuration I need to check?

2) Can copy offload tool be used with NFS v3?

- My customer wants to use copy offload tool with NFS v3 because of NFS v4’s long failover time.

- I tested the same tests above with NFS v3 and got the same result. Copy offload was not working on the first copy. But it worked the second time using NFS image cache on other cinder flexvol.

Email alerts on SnapCenter Plug-In for VMware

I'm having two, probably related issues with this otherwise excellent plug-in.

I'm using version 4.3 of the plug-in appliance, which is installed on a VMware ESXi 5.5 U3 server and connects to a 2-node FAS8200 cluster running ONTAP 9.4P5.

Problem #1: I'm unable to configure default email info in "Settings". The boxes are gray and I'm unable to type in them. (See attached screenshot.) This happens whether I'm logged in to vCenter with my regular account with admin permissions, or the VMware SSO admin account with full permissions.

Problem #2: I am able to configure email notifications for each individual resource group. However, the notifications are not getting sent. I'm assuming this is because the outgoing SMTP server address should be configured in "Settings", per problem #1.

Any idea how I can fix this?

Fail to use copy offload in OpenStack

My customer is building on OpenStack infrastructure. They use NetApp FAS as NFS backend for Cinder and Glance, but copy offload is not worked well. Can some one please tell me the solution?

They configured Cinder and Glance by the following procedure.

And they tried to create a volume by specifying an arbitrary image file as input. However, according to the following message in cinder-volume.log, regular copy seemed to occur instead of copy offload.

Windows 2016 can't connect using PowerShell

I have a OnTAP 8.2.5 (7-mode) system and have been using PowerShell scripts to generate reports from a windows 2012 server. I upgraded the Server to Windows 2016 and the scripts now fail performing the connect-nacontroller command.

Connect-NaController <..> -Credential $Creds -HTTPS

Connect-NaController : API invoke failed.

Windows 2016 disabled SSLv3 by default.

If enabled, I get a different error.

Connection to <..> using HTTPS failed - The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

The error may be resolved by generating a new certificate on the storage controller, with a longer key length.

The server has PSTK 9.7.1 installed.

Suggestions?

Have you used with SolidFire PowerShell Tools 1.5.1 with Microsoft PowerShell 7.0?

Today I realized I've been using PowerShell 7 and didn't even know it - Powershell was upgraded by Linux package manager and didn't even break SolidFire PowerShell Tools 1.5.1 (SolidFire.core module).

I don't know for how long I've been using SolidFire PowerShell Tools with PowerShell 7, but I haven't noticed any issues in casual daily use. It's not officially supported, but it appears to work fine.

Has anyone tried this combination and have you noticed any problem?

Trying to use the VSC 9.6 and no luck since day 1. Installation was smooth w/o any errors.

Environment checked and listed in IMT. vCenter Server 6.7U3 and vSphere 6.7U1. ONTAP 9.6. NFS protocol.

[Openstack][NetApp][Solidfire] ISCSI attach results in "Out of Resource - 0x0302" from Solidfire.

Hi,

We are seeing a strange issue where some ISCSI attach attempts are resulting in a "Out of Resource" error message from the Solidfire node. We see that message when we dump the traffic from our host mounting the ISCSI volume.

We do not see that error 100% of the time.
We do have a pattern where certain nodes within the same cluster are working where others are not working. Nodes that are not working are answering with the "Out of Resource" message.
The strange part is that this same cluster is used as another target for ISCSI for another Openstack cloud which is not seeing any issues.

As anyone seen such a message in the past?

VSC unable to create vvol

Looking for some advise on what i have to do to get VVol provisioning working.

Is fine with normal NFS volumes but as soon as i select vvol on the general tab I get an error.

Unable to establish session with VP server. Make sure VP service is up and running and try again.

Have rebooted the VSC appliance and tried registering, as far as i can tell everything is ok.

Any suggestion on what to do or try to fix this?

Openstack cinder storage on FlexGroup

Working on an openstack (Redhat OSP13) that uses netapp for the backend storage ( cinder/nova/glance ). the netapp is a FAS2720 running the latest 9.7 image.

I was able to get this to work using a flexvols, but want to take advantage of both of the aggregates I have using a flexgroup. has anyone been able to get this to work? I have flexgroups for both nova and cinder. they mount ok on the controller/compute. I am able to launch VMs that use only nova, but when I try to create a cinder volume, it fails.

in the controller logs I see:

ostack6_cinder is the name of the flexgroup that was created on the vserver.

I am wondering if this is just an unsupported configuration and I will have to go back to flexvol.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Volume encryption details in PowerShell Toolkit

Hi everybody

I try to create a script that shows all volumes and the encryption details. Currently I'm using the following command:

get-NcVol | select vserver, name, aggregate, encrypt

I couldn't figure out how to display the "encryption-state" (something like: vol show -volume * -fields encrypt, encryption-state). Does anybody have an idea how to get this data?

I'm using Ontap 9.5 and PowerShell Toolkit 9.6.

VSC 9.6 not working properly

Morning VSC experts. I did an install of VSC 9.6 on vSphere 6.7U3 this weekend, that alreayd had a number of datastores attached to the hosts. I have some issues.

VSC options only appears on three of the 8 datastores.

If I create a new datastore, VSC options are visible and work ok.

Datastores are visible on the cluster view, but not the SVM view, and the mgmt IP of the SVM shows the same as the cluster mgmt (this may be correct).

Need help with PS toolkit for query to remove clones and create new ones for 17 NFS volumes..

I've not that new with PowerShell and have been using it for some time but am by no means a Guru.

I have 17 NFS volumes, each containing a VMDK, which is attached to a SQL server. I'm trying to simplify my refresh process to out SQL DEV server. I have been using VMware PowerCLI and NetApp CLI to obtain my results but it's time-consuming..

I’d like to build a script that would:

Query for the Volumes
- Get-NcVol -Volume ESX_NFS_N*
Query for the clones
Dismount and delete the clones
Query for the latest snapshot
Create a clone from the latest Snapshot
Mount junction path

data broker search for a deleted vm

Hey,

I have about 30 datastores backed up by data broker version 1.0.1 in multiple resource groups.

One of my client accidentally deleted his vm.

I have no documentation on which datastore the specific vm resided.

Is there any way to run a search or somehow sort all the backed up vms by the data broker? even through the swagger api if necessary.

I only see an option to go one-by-one for all datastores and look where it was.

by the way, another question: if a datastore was completely deleted, is there a way to restore it from the data broker interface? or should I manually restore using ontap cli commands and create the flexclone myself?

Displaying output from multiple commands get-ncvol/get-ncsnapshot

I'm trying to find some orphaned snapmirrors by searching multiple controllers and filtering for snapshots using get-ncsnapshot with "snapmirror" in the name. This is working as expected. In building a query for a report, I want volume attributes on the volume contained in the get-ncvol command, { (Get-NcVol $_.Volume).Aggregate }} for example. This works as expected however; when I try to include an attribute that's nested "@{l = "Voltype"; e = { (Get-NcVol $_.volume).VolumeIdAttributes.Type }}," . The output groups by the volume name.
