Currently i have uninstalled all this and using only the NFS VAAI plugin...

This is easy to configure, is working every time, and the best is the Snapshot offload. I'm happy with that... 🙂

No need for the VSC when using NFS.

Thanks, Bingen. I just got off the phone with Adam at NetApp support. He and I verified that we can't delete the vVol with the usual commands provided by the VSC plugin and that we'll have to use some combination of ONTAP System Manager, vCenter, and the Web based CLI interface [sic.] at https://ww.xx.yy.zz:9083/ . He's going to test this out and send me a list of tasks to do. I supplied all requested logs with my original ticket (2008782637) in case anyone at NetApp wants to look at them. My main focus now is just removing the broken vVol.

Most interesting is that there is a new 9.8 version of the VSC (with a totally different name) that's been out since *February*. I didn't know about it since the product's name had been changed and there was no mention of this in the old download location. For anyone who wants to upgrade, the product is now called "ONTAP tools for VMware vSphere," so go to NetApp Downloads section and you'll find it under the letter "O."

Given that I was running the latest/last version of the "old" software, 9.7.1P1, and would have never known there was anything newer, I would recommend that NetApp add some kind of link to the new version/newly-named software from the old location. (Especially since this last version of the old software was what I was running when my vVol broke and others may think 9.7.1P1 is the latest and greatest...)

That's definitely a strange occurrence that I've never seen before.

From the VASA Provider Web UI you can do things like find missing vVols and delete them, so the support team should be able to help you with that.

I'd recommend collecting a support bundle from the VSC settings menu in vCenter, or even from the administrative web page, before any logs roll off so you can get an RCA on what happened.

Within the VASA Provider, the CXF log captures every VASA API call that is sent from vCenter, so RCA should be possible if you can nail down exactly what time we are looking for.

We had an unusual event last week that I wanted to share. I had seven VMs on a NetApp NFS-based vVol. Our Cohesity backups kicked off at 3:01pm and by 3:04pm, the VMDK files for six of those VMs went missing (the .vmdk descriptor files were still there, but the .vmdk file containing the actual data were somehow inaccessible). All versions of software were supported per NetApp's IMT: VMware versions were 7.0U1, VSC was 9.7.1P1, ONTAP was 9.7P6, VAAI plugin was 2.0. The one remaining VM on the same vVol was undamaged, and two other VMs on a separate vVol also remained intact. We've never had trouble with Cohesity backing up hundreds of other VMs on "regular NFS" datastores and this was the first time we'd seen trouble on a vVol datastore.

We were able to restore the VMs from backups taken the previous day and with little/no data loss. I currently have ticket 2008782637 in with NetApp on how to delete the suspect vVol because vCenter won't allow it. (vCenter thinks that VMs still reside on the vVol and it's probably right - even though the old, broken VMs have been deleted, their VMDKs likely exist *somewhere* in the vVol.) The only recent change I made was that I moved one VM to the impacted vVol and two VMs off of it in the hours before the backup. (vVols had been working so well for us that I wanted to put another production VM on vVols and remove two non-production ones.)

I'll continue to use vVols, but only for test VMs for the near future.

Hello Gidi, hello Didier,

I found your discussion when googling for "move-item access denied".

I can confirm that this is a ONTAP related behavior.

I wanted to move a folder F from Qtree A to Qtree B within the same Volume V. The Windows share is mapped to the Volume \\SVM\V .

"move-item \\SVM\V\A\F  \\SVM\V\B\F" gives access denied.

"move-item \\SVM\V\A\F \\SVM\V\A\F2" works as expected (including moved ACLs).

ONTAP Versions is 9.7P6, Windows Client is a Windows Server 2019 (Version 5.1.17763.1852)

Sectrace says in both cases "Access is allowed because inherited ACE grants requested access ..."
Disabling ODX did not help.
I didnot capture a PKTT -- who would analyze it? Opening a support case will not help me with my task at hand and would cost me me too much time.
So I will keep the new folders in the old qtree like
"move-item \\SVM\V\A\F to \\SVM\V\A\B\F" with B now a folder under Qtree A.

Thanks for sharing your experience and ideas,

Matthias

Hello Daniel201,

Here is the documentation for NetApp's Trident for Kubernetes detailing multi-attach support, which I also see the first integration with the ONTAP driver is in ONTAP 9.9.1:

Trident for Kubernetes - Multi-Attach

There are no details to enable "multi-attach".

Hello,

You can see the version of the plug-in from the MOB. The mob is https://"vcenter IP or host"/mob. Enter administrator credentials. Click on "content" in the value column of properties. Click on ExtensionManager. Click on "more" in the properties value column. Look for com.netapp. values. You can click on them to see the content. The bottom shows version and the description hyper link will have the product description. Please let us know if this solves your issue. Thank you.

Hello,

Based on your detail provided, you wanting the datastore created during a clone or restore to a have a specific tag like the option you have within Vsphere (Tags &Custom Attributes). Currently there is no such option within Snapcenter.

You should be able to add tag once the datastore is available from the vsphere itself.

You can also reach out to your account team to assist in getting your request to Engineering if possible.

Thanks

Hey all,

I don't know if here is the right place to ask, please be patient 🤗

We have On-prem environment based on VMWare vsphere (a few ESXi hosts and VMware VCenter). We also have Snap Center plugin for vmware VCetner installed on the VCenter itself, and a dedicated server for backups (snap center server on windows os, snap center version 4.0)

Since the plugin for VCenter is installed, we can to do a simple recovery actions from snapshots (restore a single vmdk file, de-attach and attach disks, restore entire vm, etc...). Those actions automatically creats a datastore (usually named snap-<some uid>) managed by the snap center vmware 'run as account'. I will call these 'snap center datastores'

However, a regular user still can create Virtual disks on these datastores - makig it difficult to manage.

We thought create a storage policy that prevent a regular VM disks reside on Datastore generated by the snap center. For this to come out, we need to find a way to attach vmware tag to each datastore created by the snapcenter.

Is it possible to define some vmware storage tag added automatically to those datastores when they are created?

This is important for us since we have some "leftovers" - snap center datastores being kept for a long time for some research reasons.

Hope this message is clear enough 😊

Tankwell

I suppose what would be really helpful to understand from netapp, in collaboration with the ptk team, what operations does the Reverse Resync option perform on a snapmirror relationship, how can that be transposed into powershell cmdlet/s made available in the ptk?

Hi Bobalon,

Sadly no, due to time-pressures, I was just working out the theory and haven't had the time to revisit, sorry to disappoint. I didn't get that far, but, it's good that you've pointed that out as it's not possible, anyone correct me if I'm wrong, to convert a volume with data into a DP volume, unfortunately.

I would say though, it would definitely be worth gauging the effort in migrating to SVM DR/mirrors as opposed to volume level DR/mirrors, making the need for this kind of activity redundant.

It drastically cuts down on the need to manage volume level snapmirrors. If an SVM is in a snapmirror relationship, any new volumes created on the source svm are automatically mirrored on the svm dr/mirror destination, in addition, depending on set-up/configuration, carefully read the documentation and you'll understand what I mean, all shares, junctions etc are carried over to the destination, so, breaking the SVM mirror relationship and activating the DR SVM means users would likely see very little to no downtime.

Hi there

I have a PS script to reverse resync a SnapMirror relationship which has been tested against the ontap9.5 simulator.

when running on the simulator the existing relationship remains in place (but has been previously broken) and the resync operation creates a new reverse relationship for the volumes. i.e. originally A -> B becomes B->A

when integrating into the QA test environment the controllers are running OnTap 9.1 and the resync call fails with no common snapshot in place, Note Snapmirror relationship is created but the state is Broken-off, if I try to initialize i get an error because the volume at A is RW and not DP

Were any changes made between 9.1 and 9.5 that explain this difference or am I just seeing a difference between the simulator and real world?

Thank you

I have the same issue

at present I try to create a reverse Snapmirror but it fails as both the old source and the new source are RW vols and the destination vol (old source) needs to the a DP type.

I cannot see a way to change a volume from RW to DP so appear stuck

any suggestions?

Thank you

That's brilliant - thank you

I've played around with the script to try and get a single table as opposed to individual tables per LUN path, something like this:

<LI-CODE lang="markup">vServer Lun ID IGROUP Name IGROUP TYPE IGROUP TYPE OS IGROUP ALUA ENABLE Lun Path

Bumping this to see if anyone is able to answer my question regarding whether I need a VSC local account on the NetApp at all.

Here is a correlary question: if I do need to keep it, I've already given the account a custom role based on documented limited rights the account needs. However, some of those rights are still admin-oriented, which still leaves me a little concerned about someone gaining access to the account. The only application applied to the account is ontapi. I am not clear about what "ontapi" really means in this context. If someone obtained access to the account, what would they be able to do with the "ontapi" application?

So after a bit more research I came across this approach, however it still doesn't get me what I want:
<LI-CODE lang="markup">function Get-CgiNcLunMapInfo ()
{

    $lunmapinfo = Get-NcLunMap
    $igroupinfo = Get-NcIgroup

    # Create custom object for $lunmapinfo
    # Empty array
    $lunmapinfoobjs = @()

    # Loop to set up a single custom object
    foreach ($lun in $lunmapinfo) {

        $props = @{ Vserver = $lun.Vserver
                    Path = $lun.Path
                    LunId = $lun.LunId
                    Igroup = $lun.InitiatorGroup
                    }

        $lunmapinfoobj = New-Object -TypeName PSObject -Property $props

        # Append to array
        $lunmapinfoobjs += $lunmapinfoobj

    }

    # Create custom object for $igroupinfo
    # Empty array
    $igroupinfoobjs = @()

    # Loop to set up a single custom object
    foreach ($igroup in $igroupinfo) {

        $props = @{ Igroup = $igroup.Name
                    Alua = $igroup.InitiatorGroupAluaEnabled
                    OsType = $igroup.InitiatorGroupOsType
                    GroupType = $igroup.InitiatorGroupType
                    Initiators = $igroup.Initiators
                    }

        $igroupinfoobj = New-Object -TypeName PSObject -Property $props

        # Append to array
        $igroupinfoobjs += $igroupinfoobj

    }

    $props = @{ LunInfo = $lunmapinfoobjs
                IgroupInfo = $igroupinfoobjs
                }

    $obj = New-Object -TypeName PSObject -Property $props

    Write-Output $obj

}</LI-CODE>

The above script pushes the Get-NcLunMap objects/properties under the heading 'LunInfo' and the Get-NcIgroup objects/properties under the heading 'IgroupInfo', whereas I want to combine the properties into a single table, e.g.

Path,LunId,Igroup,Vserver,Alua,Igroup,OsType,GroupType,Initiators

Thanks

Hi,

So I want to combine the output from the following two cmdlets:

<LI-CODE lang="markup">Get-NcLunMap | Select-Object Vserver,Path,InitiatorGroup,LunId
Get-NcIgroup | Select-Object InitiatorGroupAluaEnabled,InitiatorGroupOsType,InitiatorGroupType,Initiators</LI-CODE>

I've been looking at the Don Jones video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLUzPvA0HUo&t=42s, and I think I need to create a custom object. The cmdlets in the video return a single item, e.g. for a particular computer the Win32_OperatingSystem, however Get-NcLun/Igroup returns all of the LUNs/Igroups from a cluster. I can see how the Don Jones example would work for a single item but I don't understand how to upscale that when there are multiple objects returned.

Also as an aside, is there any way I can get an online/offline status for initiators into my completed table?

As you can probably tell, I'm a novice, any thoughts please?

Thanks

VSC 7.2 was installed on our VCSA 6.5 appliance. I haven't used or powered this on in over a year and want to remove it.

I found a couple of how to's, to remove the VSC, but just want to confirm if it is safe .

Found these

https://domalab.com/uninstall-netapp-vsc/

Concerned with the "Before Proceeding" section. Not totally uderstanding it's meaning.

https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP12412050/html/GUID-A2D9B4C4-D278-4616-AACA-1C8B6FA668D0.html

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I don't know that I will have time to write and troubleshoot a PS script for something like that however. Plus I really like being able to look in VSC and verify that settings are correct for all systems.

Hello,

I am attempting to reduce rights to the bare minimum on local OnTAP service accounts to increase our security posture. I've created a custom role for the VSC service account that just allows for discovery, however it occurred to me that we can probably go further.

We use VSC for one single purpose only: to verify our ESX host settings match NetApp best practices. The only thing we do is browse to Overview and click Edit ESXi Host Settings when we have a new ESX host added. With this in mind: do we need an account on the cluster at all? Do we have to perform discovery if all we do is apply appropriate settings to ESX hosts? In other words: do I even need a local service account at all? Would love to hear any suggestions or thoughts!

Are you able to duplicate the issue on another machine? Another thing that came to mind was case-sensitivity - is it possible that the volume name contains upper case letters in ONTAP but not in the variable?

But in large systems with millions of folders and files walking through all shares and subfolder is very slow process and difficult to keep in sync. Also you need a user than can browse all shares and folders and files that is quite difficult case.

Would be great if you can provide an api or file to get all through ontap.

Hello All

i am struggling with the same issue. As i wanted to clean my credentials i could not delete credentials from systems, that have been removed or renamed meanwhile.

I can not find the path suggested in the solution.

So please:

Is it possible to force remove-nccredential for a host entry that does not exists anymore??

I don't understand why its not possible to delete entries for non existing storage clusters or vservers.

Or is it possible to delete the whole file, where the credentials are stored? And if yes, i like to have the path where the credentials are stored.

While i was typing, iwas able to find this path C:\ProgramData\OnCommand\Common.

Thank you!!!!!
