How to backup StorageGRID itself

Hi All

I like StorageGRID and it seems to be a great product to implement object-store.

But how do we backup(archive?) the StorageGRID contents?

Does NetApp have products for backing up the S3 storage ( perhaps as Buckets, or whole accounts ).

Or, did anyone find great third-party products?

The OnTap volumes have snapshots and other cool features. Is there anything similar for StorageGRID?

Do you know how many times I tried the "Try It Now" button and nothing happened? On both IE and Chrome too. Now you "say it out loud", I read it, and like magic it works. Wow. Facepalm to the forehead. Bang the head on the wall. I'd give 2 valuable nickels to know why I spent an hour trying to this get to work, then I read 2 paragraphs, so the same thing, and it works. Just wow.

Azure Marketplace Connector Problem

I'm trying to deploy a local Cloud Manager instance in the Azure Government space, using the Marketplace connector option. Since this is a restricted space we cannot use NetApp's hosted SaaS Cloud Manager. I'm at the point where you point a web browser to port 80 on the VM and I see the "Setup Cloud Manager" window but it just spins and I can't continue. Any way to figure out what's going wrong? Using netstat shows no failed connections.

You will need to move all the volumes off the aggregate, delete the aggregate and then you can delete the object store.

The nutty name you're thinking of is "Swagger" - I think... 🤔

After selecting "Try it out", the interface should provide drop downs and text boxes for values appended to the URL string as well as present the JSON body in an editable text box. You can look at the Model to see what's required, minimum, etc. I usually copy/save the example JSON (as a comment in code) to keep the full body then edit out what I don't need and give it a run to see the results. After execution, Swagger will show you the curl command and full URL for the request and the results.

I do wish it allowed the addition of query fields on the URL but you can always run those separately in the browser or with curl (or Postman).

The "Features for all ONTAP APIs" section at the top is well worth a read.

So now I have another question:

In order to perform a "Try It Out" operation the API calls need some required parameters filled in. Where does one supply these parameters so the call can be "tried"? In the past these REST documentation pages (I forget what they're called, some nutty name or other 🙂 ) had a field that you could use to input parameter values in when you tried a call, but these seem to be missing said fields.

I'm using the "docs/api" link on 9.7P7 and 9.8P1 clusters, and I've tried both IE and Chrome. Is there a "secret sauce" to getting these input fields to appear? Otherwise, how does one supply the required parameters to the API calls in order to try them out?

I have read few things and they have managed to do JBoD through Fibre Channel as well.

What are you trying to accomplish? I am not familiar with this product but it looks like it connects to Exchange if my Google search is correct. What is this Vertias product and what are you trying to do with it?

Can you stick the disks back in the old 2240 and remove ownership? You need to wipe the disks as they think they are part of the other aggregate. If not, you'll have to go through quite a bit of steps to get it to wipe the disks to use as spares.

If you need help, you might be able to open a P1 case if this is a business outage. I make no promises though.

You may find more support in /r/techsupport (not really /r/netapp) on Reddit. I'm not sure if that will work, but I think one is from FAS. You list two different parts there I believe. The X3149 is a PCI-e card that NVRAM is added to it looks like. I don't think this will work, but you will need a SAS HBA to connect (from what I've seen). I've never tried this and have zero experience.

Delete Fabricpool Object-Store

I am trying to delete a Fabricpool object-store by command.

cluster::*> storage aggregate object-store config delete -object-store-name abc

Error: command failed: Cannot delete object store configuration "abc" as there are objects in the store.

I can't access the object-store now since it is a trial and expired. How can I force storage to delete the record?

Hello,

I have a FAS2240 with release 8.2.4P4 7-Mode with the following RAID DP configuration
1 disk parity
1 disk dparity
8 disks data
2 disks broken (0a.00.2 and 0a.00.4) => No more spare disks

I swapped the broken disks with new ones coming from another unused FAS2240 and ran the commands :

When we run 'storage encryption disk show' the disk has its non-default data-key-id and is in mode 'data', as such we know the disk itself is encrypted fine, as the root aggregate also shows drive-protection-enabled as true.

It very much matches the output issue as per that BURT, ideally it needs tagging for 9.8P2 as well as it effects us on that version as well as the ones currently listed.

Hello Guy,

I would like to create connection between veritas EV connect with netapp svm mgmt lif.

We have veritas enterprise vault installed on windows server IP (10.4.130.35)

Netapp SVM mgmt lif (10.4.130.24)

It also same subnet.it does not have a firewall rule on security part.So,we have to use https connection between EV and SVM Mgmt lif becuase it is customer's compliance.

I am not sure do i need to config anything first.

Anyone help me to suggest to solve the issue?

volumes distributed on both aggregates

scheduled snapshot policies on each volumes

--second pair nodes for ESX and other SAN provisioning, 48 disks, one aggregate on each node, partitioned disks

--third pair nodes for an mission critical app, 24 disks

2). Backup

Veritas NetBackup, NDMP backups from nodes for all CIFS, VMs, SQL, Exchanges...

When I run "storage aggregate show -aggregate * -fields encrypt-with-aggr-key,drive-protection-enabled" it lists the root aggregate for the SED disks as true for drive-protection-enabled and the data aggregates as false. Got myself in a pickle trying to work it out, then found the above bug. It could do with being tagged for 9.8P2 as well.

We also have big issues with SnapManager 7.2.0

Can't roll back the patch either for the same reason (security).

Will need a solution pretty soon, otherwise we will go for another vendors product.

we are currently migrating our DCs from w2k8 to Windows Server 2019. We have installed 2 new servers and the corresponding roles and upgraded them to DCs. They should take over the IP addresses of the two existing w2k8 DCs or this is already the case with one of them.
Now the Netapp (Version 8.2.4P5 7-Mode) shows every now and then (or with cifs testdc) for the DC that has taken over the IP the message:
[Filer:cifs.smb2.client.signing:error]: Connection to server:\\DC02 failed due to mismatch in signature.
I have searched a lot but have not found a solution yet.
Cifs signing is disabled:

Are you talking about a 7-mode filer's main screen, where you click the name of the filer and see statistical charts? If so that's what I'm referring to. Those may not work but I'm betting the main functionality works fine. I can say that both work fine for me after deploying Ruffle.

We're using Snapmgr in 7mode. Snapcenter is not supported so we can 1. uninstall that KB, which is not an option or 2. look at another backup software. Thats not a "solution" netapp...

Here ist the NetApp KB article: SME unable to see database after Exchange Security update KB5001779 - NetApp Knowledge Base
For me it is not an option to uninstall critical security updates. However, Exchange Server 2016 is only supported up to CU11. Any newer CU is not supported and therefore I would not expect an solution by NetApp.

I have migrated to SnapCenter 4.4. (which was already runnig for SQL, VMWare and HANA). This is documented here

Please note that you can not restore an SnapManager Snapshot with SnapCenter.

Hi,

IHAC whose Fabric Pool term licence has expired. Because of imminent DC moves and company divestitures they don't wish to renew it. Also, the current data footprint is expected to reduce by 80% within 12 months due to a company split. They've 240TB FP licences currently in full use across two clusters.

Assuming they're on (or upgrade to) a suitable version of ONTAP, could they Fabric Pool mirror in the Cloud Tiering Service to take advantage of PAYG-style pricing on a monthly basis rather than fixed term one year commitment?

In any case, the primary rule:

For each cluster peer, **all** intercluster interfaces on the source need to be able to ping **all** intercluster interfaces on the destination. The work around is to use dedicated IPspaces on the source and destination if needed if the source and/or destination belong to other cluster peers that its partner does not know about, especially, if they have no route to those IPs.

The "cluster ping" test will only ping intercluster LIFs in the same IPspace.

It is not a good idea to route (in the context of using multiple IC LIFs and multiple cluster peers) **unless** all source IPs can actually ping all destination IPs.

I myself indeed never had the source being pulled from other clusters via separate interfaces hence can't comment much (I guess that was one of the scenarios where good-old fastpath have helped with before).

I do have one more comment for the thread owner to reconsider; maybe stating the obvious, but how about removing the old interfaces and move both the L2 and the routed traffic to go via the new interfaces? (*just maybe make sure to route the traffic out via the local router in each site).

For what it's worth, I've been advised by support to uninstall the security update. Since that would open the servers up to severety 9.8 remote code execution vulnerabilities, I'd rather forgo backups for a while, or even look for an alternative solution in general.

It isn't readily obvious at all but hopefully this is what you're looking for...

Click the "Try it out" button, scroll down to the Responses section. You 'll see the "Example Value | Model" label.

Click on "Model" - then you can expand the details by clicking on the ">" arrows. Drill down until you get to the info you're asking about.

...so for your specific question...

"Model" -> records -> file_info -> "type" -> Array [9]

There is no "Cost" tab in Cloud Manager for CVO in Azure

In Cloud Manager, for CVO in AWS, you can find a "Cost" tab between "Volume" and "Replications" tabs, which show you the AWS Monthly Cost.

However, how do I find the same monthly cost for CVO in Azure? There seems no such tab or option.

Unfortunately, Data ONTAP 7.3.x passed end of version support in 2016 and the FAS2020 passed end of support in mid-2017.

The 7.3.7 software is not available from any source at NetApp.

If you do obtain the software from a kind soul and plan to wipe the system, make sure you document/record the software licenses on the nodes, since you will have to re-install them.

You will not need to change the Cluster IPs. Please follow the instructions exactly, or there may be a data service or cluster outage.

Hi there,

The cluster network is internal only - it is created using setup, and uses IPSpaces, so it doesn't matter if you are using the same IP space on another part of your network (which you shouldn't be anyway, since it's in the link local scope, which should never be routed..).

I strongly caution you not to change the Cluster IP addresses.

..that said, as the CLI says, the error with the commands you have provided is that you are not specifying the IP address you want to change it to, just the subnet.

Can I ask why you want to change the IPs?

Cluster IPs are used for backend communication between nodes - for administration of nodes, you want to have Node Management IPs and a Cluster Management IP. Those ones you can change if you want.

My immediate need is to determine all the possible values returned in the "type" field for a GET /storage/volumes/{volume.uuid}/files/{path} call. I can see from the examples that 2 of the possible returned values are "file" and "directory", but what are the other values? I can't find any of this sort of information in the doc/api link on the cluster, nor can I find any relevant reference on the NetApp support site. Please advise as to how to obtain this level of detail.

Yes. It's recommended to separate temporary files (swap/page files for OS, tempdb files for databases, etc.) to separate volumes and not snapshot/dedupe/SnapMirror for obvious reasons. If you have a specific directory that is high change rate, this makes absolute sense.

Another note if someone finds this looking for help. This problem appears to be related to the version of Windows 10 that was deployed to our clients. We have a lot of application vendors who don't even endorse Windows 10 yet, or want _REALLY_ old versions. We deployed 1809 against recommendations from many of them, and apparently this issue is a problem with network file share searching in 1803 and 1809. It was supposedly fixed in 1903 and later. We are seeing signs this is correct, but need to further validate.

Normal powerhsell comands (in Exchange Shell) like get-exchangeserver -status -identity run as expected.

In my case: The Windows schedule job runs but actually nothing happens and there is no log created under C:\Program Files\NetApp\SnapManager for Exchange\Report\Backup.

Please verify if you are seeing the same errors in your environment , it is an indication that Exchange Powershell cmdlets are failing.

Hello my friend,

If we're talking about traditional backup, reading blocks and files from the filer, yes, there's a good possibility of it being the culprit.

Backup operations normally puts significant pressure on the array. Of course, some feels it harder when having small aggregates or slow disks. But in my experience, almost 100% of my customers have a turbulent environment when in backup windows.

If you have AIQUM or NAbox, you could easily check if during the backups you latency and disk utilization is putting your VMs in bad shape.

If that is the case suggestions would be (some may not apply, it all depends on your environment):

- reschedule backups so they does not compete for resources

- add more disks

- rethink your volume placement

- you could change your env making snaps in a primary storage and replicating efficiently with snapmirror/vault to another filer.

- the list goes on....

Have you looked into using QoS on the volume doing the backup to limit how much impact there is to performance?

Also, if that volume is a FlexGroup volumes, consider disabling the share property "changenotify" - that property has been known to cause performance impact on a system.

Yes it makes sense. Since you know the culprit and it does not have a snapshot requirement, you could that. It would save you storage.

It all comes down to your protection requirements and space availability. If space is an issue and snapshots are not so important for this directory, go ahead.

We are also experiencing the same issues following the installation of this patch, We have logged this with Netapp and are currently awaiting a response.

I am not aware of any work around at this time and from similar issues posted to Microsoft here :

Exchange KB5001779 breaks SnapManager for Exchange

I have a few older servers still using SnapManager rather than SnapCenter, and the critical security update that Microsoft released a few days ago (KB5001779) completely breaks SnapManager compatibility - backup jobs no longer run, and console reports "Unable to determine Exchange virtual server group status before SnapManager operation" straight upon opening. This is happening both in Exchange 2013 and Exchange 2019, same error. I have opened a case with support, but while I'm waiting for a response, has anyone else run into this, and is there a workaround?

Thanks. That command only returned 'The node configuration is up-to-date. No upgrade is needed.' but I ended up going the old school route of 'system node image update', setting default image and rebooting, which worked out ok.
