topic Reducing NetApp DS4486 Power Usage in General Discussion

I have a DS4486 with four power supplies and two IOMs. I currently only have 17 drives installed due to funding limitations.

I know that what I'm going to ask is not a standard use case, but I would like to know what might be able to be done.

I would like to attempt to reduce the power usage of the 4486. If I partially remove a power supply the fans ramp up to a ridiculous level that doesn't help power usage or noise level. Is there a way to operate the DS4486 with one or two power supplies without the fans going crazy?

I also have a DS4246 that only has two power supplies with blanks in the other power two power supply slots and its fans don't ramp up. Was hoping the DS4486 would have a similar operating mode.

Thanks in advance for any advice with this question.

Ryan

DS4246 is available with 2 or 4 PSUs as an option. DS4486 was a single config of 4 PSUs only. I assume you're not using it with a NetApp system - in which case you might want to buy another DS4246 to use instead (or move all the drives from the DS4246 into it, so you're only running one enclosure)

Alex,

Thanks for the response. You are correct, I am NOT using this with a NetApp system. I am using both the DS4246 and DS4486 simultaneously for different applications. I was just looking for a way to temporarily reduce power usage of the DS4486 before I fill it up with drives. It sounds like there is no option to do this. Thanks again!

Ryan
