When backuping the Front-end, SMSP have to copy the files that resides on the web sites and in other places... I have seen some TCP/445 during the Front-End backup from the media server... while some multiple 10Mo .dat files are created on the media service logical device. So just to verify and document somewhere this flow if there is a Firewall between the media service and the front end. Thanks.

SnapDrive uses either http/https/SMB RPC(default is RPC) to communicate with storage systems, for this reason it opens a TCP 445 socket to filer.

Whenever we are using SnapDrive the actual data is already on a LUN, i.e. on the filer, and for backup and mirrororing we use snapshot, snapmirror or snapvault technologies of Data ONTAP.

Since the data is already on the NetApp filer, SharePoint server doesn't need to copy any more data to filer.

When using mirroring data will be transferred from snapvault/snapmirror primary to secondary.
