Make sure the number of disks that you have in the hosting aggregate (which impacts the volume thougput).

At least match the source volume, the more spindles the better.Obviously the new env might be a fatser system which will have some performance benifits any way with CPU/BUS speed etc.

Hi all,

We have an Oracle 10gR2 (10.1.2.0.3) database on a (old) Netapp Filer running ONTAP version 7.0.1.1P3.

The datafiles and redlo log filer volumes are on 32 bit aggregates and nfs mounted to a solaris box.

We are are looking to move the datafile and redo log filer volumes to a new filer running ONTAP 8.0.2RC1. (also to 32 bit aggregates)

We will be closing the database and using snapmirror to transfer the datafiles/redo logs etc to the new filer.

Are there any issues moving these datafiles/redo logs filer volumes from a filer running ONTAP 7.0.1.1P3 to a new filer running ONTAP 8.0.2RC1, that we need to be aware of?

The datafile/redo log filer volumes will have the same name on the new filer, and will be nfs mounted to the original Solaris box.

Thanks for any assistance you can give.

Just snapmirror the volumes when the DB is offline and then remount to the new system/pat, bring the DB online and thats it.

Peter

FWIW - If the data in question were in a vFiler you could live migrate the data to the new controller with Data Motion (which essentially does an asynchronous snapmirror followed by a synchronous snapmirror for the final sync) with no outage! This is assuming you are running version 8 in 7-mode of course.

Cheers,

Jeff
