Hi,

Can you run Commvault Sympania 9 in addition to NetApp SnapProtect in the same environment and "console." The majority of our system are either virtualized or attached to our NetApp SAN, but we still have roughly 15 or so standalone systems that aren't connected to the SAN. We are backing up roughly 18TB during our full backups (15TB of SAN data). If we went with CS9, we would most likely purchase licenses by capacity, whereas the NetApp SP is licensed by controller.

With either solution, should we purchase a NetApp array such as a 2200 series to be used as a B2D target? I think you have to with NetApp SnapProtect but not with CS9. Are there any advantages to using a NetApp array as a B2D target over non-NetApp array for B2D?

Any other suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

NetApp SnapProtect and Simpana are independent products with separate consoles.

You would want to use a NetApp array as a backup target, but you would want to leverage SnapVault here (and not just depend on traditional B2D).

We are using commvault v9 with a different vendors SAN style devices. commvault will dump data to any device that windows(in our case, not sure about *nix) can see. we have an iSCSI connection to our targets and it works great.

i am currently not backing up our netapp devices with the Commvault SnapProtect product though. But since commvault is injecting the information, i find it highly unlikely that they would require a netapp storage array for that use.

Hope this helps.

There are several advantages to using the SnapProtect capability to protect NetApp data

Accelerated backups - Snapshot based, application consistent backups without copy out based data movement with searchable file and application backup catalog and a much smaller backup footprint

Super fast recovery - Granular recoveries from Snapshot backups along with unique capabilities like Array based restores (Single File Snap Restores) for NAS files and VMDKs

Efficient Replication - Seamless workflows to replicate backups efficiently using SnapMirror and SnapVault

Multi-use of backups - Backups are in native-format enabling multi-use of backup copies to support test/dev, analytics etc
