[FAS2750] how to migrate volumes

Hello.

I have a question.

We are going to renew FAS 2750 for a project.

1. Now we have 15TB volume.
2.The license to be applied will be ordered in core bundle, so snap mirror will not be available.
3. How can I safely migrate ?

Could you explain more detailed which type of Volume will be migrated and how is accessed? CIFS, NFS, LUN, VMware, etc.

There are many ways to migrate data.

This is my first NetApp renewal project and I am not sure if this is an answer to your question, but here is my response.

There are multiple volumes, of type NFS3.0 and SMB2.0.
I have multiple volumes, type NFS3.0 and SMB2.0, accessed from VMware Windows and RHEL partitions.
My project environment is offline.

Hello Yoshimasa,

I think you should evaluate the best option for every volume. If you could get a 90 days snapmirror license, it will be the easier option. Some options you can evaluate:

- Migrate volumes with Snapmirror (Snapmirror license)

- SVM data mobility (9.12.1 and snapmirror license)( i did it sometimes with no downtime)

- Rent a couple Cluster switches, add the new nodes to the cluster, vol move and then remove the old nodes (i did it with no downtime).

- And the last one, is migrate the data from Operating system side. For example, new volumes for VMware and Storage VMotions, rsyncs for NFS clients or robocopy for CIFS.

Hello Yoshimasa,

Netapp XCP is a great option for migrating NFS data and its free. I've used it in several large migrations. And for windows robocopy. If you are migrating Netapp to Netapp, get a 90 day snapmirror license for both clusters and configure SVMDR.

Thank you for your answer. Regarding NFS, we are planning to migrate using storage vMotion with VMware. Am I correct in my understanding that vol move supports both CIFS and NFS?

Yes, the vol move you can do it with CIFS or NFS, also with volumes containing LUNs.

Anytime I see VMware in play, I’ll always recommend using storage vmotion. It’s easy enough to build and attach a new datastore(s) then migrate into it/them

you do lose snapshots using this method. If you are using SnapCenter then it may be worth the vol move.

if you have luns, be aware that the new nodes must have block based lifs before the move starts
