Running "disk maint" on a broken disk?

I just added a used disk to an existing filer and zeroed it (this was fine). Then added it to an existing aggregate and immediately got a string of:

Tue Jul 20 21:56:08 PDT [netapp0a: raid.tetris.cksum.embed:CRITICAL]:

Invalid checksum entry on Disk /aggr0/plex0/rg0/0c.00.7 Shelf 0 Bay 7

[NETAPP X286_S15K5146A15 NA01] S/N [3LN0GZPC00009736X1W9], block #911993, during write operation.

So I immediately ran "disk fail 0c.00.7". But now "disk maint" won't work. Is there any way to run diagnostics on a failed disk?

> disk maint start -t ndst -d 0c.00.7

disk maint: Disk 0c.00.7 is not available

I have seen http://communities.netapp.com/message/15992#15992 which contains interesting hints, but not a solution.

Sounds like the fail command does what it says on the tin. The disk is 'failed' and can not be used as it is fail, ie dead.

http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/ontap/rel707/html/ontap/cmdref/man1/na_disk.1.html

disk fail [-i] [-f] disk_name
Force a file system disk to be failed. disk fail is used to remove a file system disk that may be logging excessive errors and requires replacement.

If disk fail is used without options, the disk will first be marked as ``prefailed''. If an appropriate spare is available, it will be selected for Rapid RAID Recovery. In that process, the prefailed disk will be copied to the spare. At the end of the copy process, the prefailed disk is removed from the RAID configuration. The filer will spin that disk down, so that it can be removed from the shelf. (disk swap must be used when physically removing SCSI disks.)

The disk being removed is marked as ``broken'', so that if it remains in the disk shelf, it will not be used by the filer as a spare disk. If the disk is moved to another filer, that filer will use it as a spare. This is not a recommended course of action, as the reason that the disk was failed may have been because it needed to be replaced

Can you try it in a 2nd filer?

Hope it helps

Bren
