hi, I am trying to plan my storage for a new NetApp based storage solution I need to put into a new datacenter

We will be using VMware almost exclusively, as such NFS is where all the data will be stored

I am trying to decide how to break up the storage, and part of that decision will be based on where de-duplication occurs

Does is occur at the aggregate level or volume level?

Hi,

De-dupe scan is volume-wide, although metadata is stored in an aggregate.

In other words, two (or more) identical blocks within the same volume will be reduced to one, whilst two (or more) identical blocks in different volumes will not be de-duplicated.

Regards,

Radek
