I want to relocate my NetApp cluster FAS 8300, need to know the process.

Hi ,

I want to shift my netapp cluster FAS 8300 to different DATA center with out affecting cluster settings. Its just lift and shift by removing the management cables and plug it back. The problem is different networks that will be available to use.

What would be easiest way to accomplish this task.

Should i change just cluster management, node management and SP ips before shipping?

Hi there,

I would suggest to do it when you get to the destination using a serial connection.

Ensure you have local admin account username and password ready and tested prior to move, as BMC/SP doesn't use AD authentication and cluster AD auth may be unavailable. I would also suggest you write the commands in advance to change the IPs and subnets when you reach the other side, and save them in a notepad file or similar.

I would like to know the key difference between changing the IPs prior and post shipment. For other storage array I used to change IPs prior shipment and at destination it just plug and play.

could you please also help with some reference document for changing the IPs using console . I got the commands using cluster management ip that can be used prior shipment.

My thinking is that revert is much easier if you change IPs on the other side, and it gives you an opportunity to watch it shutting down via a SP/BMC console if you're having someone else move it. The down side is you do need a serial connection (or something else on the same layer 2 network so you can temporarily fake the old subnet) to get it going again.

To change the IPs, you'll need to change the subnet, over serial, after first changing the BMC IP addresses - https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-cli-98/network-subnet-modify.html#parameters

In terms of cluster operations, you don't need to change cluster LIF IP addresses - they are local-address assigned and private to the cluster network, by default.

Hi Alex,

The device is shipped to target location and i could get console connection with the help of DC engineer. Would you please help with the steps to get going with Serial console. I see boot options showing up but how do i change the ips. is there a procedure which can help?

the Ontap system boot up now. I need help changing the old management IPs to new ips using serial console connection. I have never done it using Serial console hence need some help.
