Convert a volume rw to dp

Hi,

I am new on netapp system, I am try to covert a volumen rw to a dataprotection type to used it as mirror of another volumen, but I don't know how do it or if it is posible.

and I have another question Whe you delete a snapmirror relationship, what means de option: " Ok Release the base Snapshot copies of the reationship on the source volume. If you do not select this option, you need to go to ONTAP CLI on the source side to release later"

What version of ONTAP are you using?

What kind of relationship are you using, is it SnapMirror XDP?

What you are trying to achieve with converting your volume to DP, are you trying to reverse SnapMirror replication back?

That'll be great if you'll draw your replication schema and post the image here.

Sure, it can be converted. In versions 9.3 and earlier, the data protection relationship is still set to DP mode by default. Starting from version 9.4, the default mode for data protection relationships is XDP. From version 9.12.1 and later, DP type relationships are no longer supported. generally speaking you can't convert existing RW volume to a DP volume
it is only possible if:

1. this volume was a DP volume originally and existing snapmirror relationship was broken (breaking a snapmirror relationship changes volume from DP to RW)

In this case you need to resync broken snapmirror relationship which points to this volume -> this will convert it back to DP

2. reverse snapmirror resync scenarios - when original RW volume needs to become a DP volume to revert changes back from DR site - this requires creating reverse snapmirror relationship and resyncing it

Additionally if

1. the volume which was created as RW and has/had any data and never was involved in snapmirror relationship - it can't be converted to DP

2. the volume was created as RW by accident and is empty and the purpose of it to be destination volume - the easiest way is simply recreate it as DP
