Hi all

I 've read a number of article on the subject.

So sorry to open this new thread, if

I need to replace an old FAS3020 by a new one FAS3220

and also upgrade to OnTap 8.1.2

only the controller will be change, I'm going to keep all my DS14 shelves

So we will received a brand new FAS3220 with compaq flash new version 8 and NO disk or shelf

FAS3020 is running OnTap 7.3.3

Aside lun serial, network port ,......

Can I just replace FAS3020 by 3220, connect DS14, boot the new FAS3220

What it will happen with the version difference between Compaq Flash and root volume?

The opinion and advice of somebody who has already done this kind swap will be much appreciated

Lat time I tried swap my 6020 to 6280 which is a lot of fun:>)

You may wish to open a support case + get your NetApp account team involved to hook up a NetApp Prof Service guru to get this tough job done.

Yes sur it's an option

but as you know :time is budgetary restriction

So if I can avoid this PS option

I will be happy

If anybody on community has some experience

I've read that a guy simply replace head ,and aggregat converts itself , and he didn't have problem with root volume running OnTap7, after did an upgrade to 8

and that's it

If your FAS3020 running business critical apps, you may wish to get an action plan through your NetApp account team before you jump in to swap the head.

Be aware about DS14 shelves, DS14MK2 (very widely used in a time of FAS3020) is not supported anymore in current 8.x series of ONTAP. So check, which DS14 you have now, BEFORE upgrade will be engaged.

"Is not supported" as in "will not boot" or "will boot but complaint loudly"? The latter is perfectly OK for one time head swap boot.

There were reports that booting DOT 8.x on 7.x root volume without proper upgrade procedure resulted in extended outage and had to be fixed by NetApp support. So unless you get explicit support ability statement from NetApp, safe way is to setup new filer and transfer data (I would use SnapMirror)

it's DS14MK4 (add later after FAS3020 setup)

to summarize, can we say, that if all components are in the matrix

swap the head, boot FAS3220 should be ok

as we will not able to buy another shelf for doing what you suggest

I don't find any documentation for head swap for FAS3020 -> FAS3220 on the now site.

Hi Klemen

Yes we did the swap

Here are the steps followed:

Update FAS3020 to the last DOT 7.3.7P1

disable HA (cf disable)

check root volume to be at least 250GB

make a note of rc and hosts file

check is disk owner ship for FAS3020 is hardware or software

If it's hardware, boot FAS3020 into maintenance mode and convert to software disk ownership with disk upgrade_ownership command

replace FAS3020 with brand new FAS32xx

Boot FAS32xx to maintenance mode and reassign disk to the controller (command disk reassign -s old-systemID -d new-systemID

Then type the following commands if you replace HA Pair (storage release disks , mailbox destroy local, mailbox destroy partner)

Check that aggregate are ok (aggr status)

Then exit maintenant mode (halt)

boot FAS32xx

During the first boot, raid label are update + some message on aggregate

When FAS32xx is load, you do an upgrade to refresh root volume with DOT8 ( software update 81xxx.tgz)

Same work on the second FAS32xx

Boot both controller

Make some verification/test

Modify rc file and replace vif command by ifgrp

put FAS32xx license you should have received with you new FAS

And finally enable cluster (cf enable)

Before head swap we also made a note of lun serial in case

But serial numbers have not been modified by the swap

Also check if you Brocade switch zone configuration doesn't need update with new WWPN
