ONTAP NAS volume/share in general 'accessed' from the Host/client-Side using Network Filesystem Protocols such as SMB/CIFS & NFS. It's up to the Host-OS (Windows/*nix) how it handles it. However, if the file is deleted then ONTAP snapshots protects it and allows you to recover it via NFS/SMB or CLI.

Restore a file from a Snapshot copy on an NFS or SMB client:
https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/data-protection/snapshot-copies-work-concept.html

Snapshots: including SnapShot Issues and Solutions - NetApp Knowledge Base
