(Filer) API Question: What is the timeout option supposed to do?

From what I can tell, the <timeout> option in the DFM 6.3 does not do anything. The API description makes it sound like it would support long-polling, but the following request immediately returns 0 results on my system, completely ignoring the timeout:

<netapp  xmlns="http://www.netapp.com/filer/admin" version="1.0">
  <event-iter>
    <greater-than-id>40006</greater-than-id>
    <timeout>30</timeout>
  </event-iter>
</netapp>

Am I using it wrong, or is it supposed to do something else?
