Hi,

Background information.

vSphere 5.5 Update 1

VSC 4.2.2 on Windows Server 2008 R2

Ontap 8.1.4

Virtual machine. Oracle/SQL DB on Windows Server 2008 R2

The VSC jobs are configured to run quiesced snapshots for all the VM within the Datastores

Most of our database servers fail when doing the quiesced the snapshot due to a timeout.

This is not a major drawback as we already back up all those databases by means of traditional backup, so it's not mandatory for us to have a consistent VSC backup, even tough it really would be quite helpful. But we need to do consistent backup for other VMs within the same datastore, so we'd rather doing a granular consistency snapshot, is that possible?, could we have VMs with and without consistency snapshots within the same datastore?

Thank you.

I've had uninstalled the VMWare Tools VSS component off those problematic machines, in order to not doing quiesced snapshots.

don't see why not, you would just need to create two jobs on teh datastore, one that does the quiesced vm's and one that doesn;t/

you will just need to bear in mind you will be taking two snapshots on the volume, just be aware of that for retention periods.

you could always troubleshoot the VSS timeout issue you are getting, it can be caused by all kinds of things in a vmware environment...

up to you whether you want to spend the time on it or not!
