Hi all,

I am using SMVI for backups of an ESX virtualisation infrastructure. I present around 20 luns through fiber to the ESX hosts. There is one lun per volume.

While the backups work ok, I noticed that one volume seems to be snapshotted 2 times. The output makes you think that the volume is in 2 different jobs.

I checked the schedules in the netapp vCenter plugin and this volume is actually only configured 1 time. However the snapshot names make me think somehow it gets taken into another job as well.

One job starts at 23:30 and another at 00:30.

I am not sure if this is a bug in SMVI or if this has something to do with ESX.

Volume vol16

working...

  %/used %/total date name

---------- ---------- ------------ --------

  2% ( 2%) 1% ( 1%) Jan 10 01:52 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120110003000 (snapvault)

  3% ( 0%) 2% ( 0%) Jan 09 23:59 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120109233000

  3% ( 1%) 2% ( 1%) Jan 09 00:36 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120109003000

  4% ( 1%) 3% ( 0%) Jan 07 23:37 smvi_Group 2 weekly backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_recent

  5% ( 1%) 3% ( 0%) Jan 07 01:26 smvi_Group 4 weekly backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_recent

  6% ( 1%) 4% ( 1%) Jan 06 23:40 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120106233000

  6% ( 1%) 4% ( 0%) Jan 06 01:01 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120106003000

  6% ( 0%) 4% ( 0%) Jan 05 23:38 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120105233000

  7% ( 1%) 5% ( 1%) Jan 05 01:02 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120105003000

  8% ( 0%) 5% ( 0%) Jan 04 23:45 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120104233000

  8% ( 1%) 5% ( 1%) Jan 04 01:08 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120104003000

  9% ( 0%) 6% ( 0%) Jan 03 23:46 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120103233000

  9% ( 1%) 6% ( 0%) Jan 03 01:10 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120103003000

  9% ( 0%) 6% ( 0%) Jan 02 23:45 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120102233000

10% ( 1%) 7% ( 0%) Jan 02 00:31 smvi_Group 4 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20120102003000

10% ( 1%) 7% ( 0%) Jan 01 02:31 smvi_Group 4 monthly backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_recent

11% ( 0%) 7% ( 0%) Jan 01 01:31 smvi_Group 2 monthly backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_recent

11% ( 0%) 7% ( 0%) Dec 31 23:44 smvi_Group 2 weekly backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20111231233000

12% ( 1%) 8% ( 1%) Dec 31 00:45 smvi_Group 4 weekly backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20111231003000

12% ( 0%) 8% ( 0%) Dec 30 23:35 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20111230233000

13% ( 1%) 9% ( 1%) Dec 29 23:38 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20111229233000

14% ( 1%) 10% ( 1%) Dec 28 23:38 smvi_Group 2 daily backup remote snapvault enabled_novmsnap_20111228233000

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

May be checking smvi logs will help you trace any error or duplicate jobs.. for eg path collect logs "C:\Program Files\NetApp\SMVI\server\log" and then download smvi log viewer from Netapp support site and follow below instructions.

. Unzip the archive to your local system

2. Double-click SMVILogViewer.exe

3. Select the File menu and the Open option

4. Select one or more SMVI server log files

5. Wait for the files to finish parsing

The operations pane (top half) has a right-click menu to select which operations to view based on their exit status (Success, Fail, Unknown, All).

The messages pane (bottom half) has a right-click menu to select which messages to view (from all messages to only error messages).

If you wish to view the contents of the currently live server log file, you will need to copy the file to another name first.

-DEV

I checked the reports.

One thing I noticed: with removing vol16 no new snapshots have been created. Not in name of group 2 or group 4.

I was wondering if it might have something to do with spanned entities that go over multiple datastores?

Seems like I never took the time to update this thread.

Will do it now... maybe it helps someone else out.

The reason that it was taken in 2 jobs was indeed because of the vmdks being spread over 2 datastores.

So you can either deselect the vmdk from the spanned entities or you can move the vmdk to the same datastore.

I went for the latter one as there was still enough space.

After that all went fine again

Thanks anyway for your reply sharmadevender!
