StorageGrid - inquiries

Hello, we are architecting a new StorageGrid deployment and have some questions:

- Load balancer: do all the client data traffic must go through the load balancer or it is possible to configure the load balancer to redirect the clients to one of the storage nodes.

- Appliances: how many disks can fail before an appliance stop serving data?

Thanks!

Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,

- Load balancer: do all the client data traffic must go through the load balancer or it is possible to configure the load balancer to redirect the clients to one of the storage nodes.

Answer: Not all the client data traffic must go throught the loadbalancer. You can directly send client traffic to a specific storage node. If you decide to send your traffic through the load balancer then it is not possible to configure the load balancer to redirect the clients to one of the storage nodes as this is not a supported configuration.

- Appliances: how many disks can fail before an appliance stop serving data?

Answer: This depends on the cofiguration of your appliance whether DDP, DDP16 or RAID 6, and number of drives (preservation capacity). Please refer to the E-series documentation for the underying hardware of your appliance.

To add something to the accepted answer: SG data is better protected than with the underlying E-Series array because SG protects data across 2 or more storage arrays (default 2-replicas policy  = each object is replicated on 2 arrays).

You could lose an array and SG would still have a copy of objects from the failed array to recover from.
