I have a customer with MS SQL DBs running horribly on W2k8r2 VSpere VMs. I found they were originally provisioned with regular "Windows" LUN type (which is specific to Windows 2003) which explains that improper block alignment is causing the poor performance. I've been told that the best way to resolve this is create new LUNs with "Windows 2008" type, then migration the DBs to those new LUNs. Has anyone ever done this successfully? If yes, what were your steps? Does anyone know of any other better way?
In case anyone was wondering, the DBs were moved off the NetApp, new LUNs created with the correct OS type, remapped to the host, and DBs were moved back.
