Hello community !

is it possible to backup a NFS based OpenStack environment with SnapProtect?

If not, is there any other backup solution that integrates with our storage and openstack?

Thank you !

Jaime

Jaime -

You can back up NetApp NFS volumes with SnapProtect.

There is the NetApp NAS iDataAgent.

Unlike other agents, which get installed on the host, the NAS iDataAgent is installed on the CommServe, not on the filer.

There isn't any integration to set up the SnapProtect policies through OpenStack yet that I know of.

I hope this response has been helpful to you.

Thank you Eugene !

Is there any use case that would need integration with Hypervisor ?

As far as I know there's no KVM support in SnapProtect.

Jaime

Yes, there is a use case.

VMs should be quiesced before the snapshot is taken.

There are SnapProtect Virtual Storage Agents (VSAs) for Hyper-V and VMware .

Though I don't find KVM support documented in SnapProtect, you may wish to look at the following link on Simpana with KVMs:

http://documentation.commvault.com/hds/v10/article?p=prod_info/unix_virtualization/right_kvm.htm

( SnapProtect is Commvault Simpana with NetApp specific supported mods. )

I hope this response has been helpful to you.

Saluting Eugene,

Would you please also advice what's the benefit to utilize SnapProtect Virtual Storage Agents (VSAs) for VMware to protect SQL Database in NFS mount on filer?

Thanks in advance + looking forward to hear from you soon.

Thank you, very much.

No need for any salutes, I just try to do my best to do my duty.

Apologies for a slow reply - it's midnight here in Hong Kong.

I think I need to go to bed !

VSAs would be used to back up the host VM for the database.

The database aware iDataAgent should be installed on the VM itself to coordinate the back up of the DB files.

You say 'SQL Database', but not which one. There's an iDataAgent for MSSQL, there's another for Oracle DBs.

I hope this response has been helpful to you.
