How to activate an Oracle DRP site ?

Hi,

IHAC who wants to build a DRP site.

The goal is to have standby servers waiting to be activated.

To backup the Oracle DB, the customer will use SMO for Windows and PM to configure snapmirrors.

I do see well how it will work to restore DB from the secondary site to the primary site in case of need.

But I don't see well what to do to make a whole DRP work, i.e. primary site is no more available:

- every primary servers destroyed

- every repositories on the primary site destroyed

- every DB destroyed on the primary site.

All data is OK on the secondary site, but how can we use it and how can we rebuild easily the whole infrastructure ?

I guess we can use flexclone to make luns available again.

But how can the secondary servers use these luns to start Oracle DB again ?

Regis -

You don't need to clone on the remote side.

You can break the mirror, and then mount it r/w on the remote side.

This includes mounting the repositories on the remote.

After the primary is recovered from the disaster you can resync the mirror back to the primary.

Another option is to use Oracle Data Guard to replicate the database and handle the failover,

with snapmirror replicating transactions. This is the model Oracle implements between their

data centers. See the Oracle paper 'How We Saved a Billion Dollars' by Ellison...

Thank you Eugene.

We need to stay with a full NetApp replication solution.

But if you just break the mirror, the luns will be inconsistent on the FS side and on the appli side.

That's why I thought we should clone or restore the snapshots taken by SnapManager for Oracle.

What do you think ?

Protection manager should be doing snapmirror async from the SMO snapshots, so the LUNs and DB should be in a consistent state already.

Hi Eugene,

I'm not sure of that since Protection Manager doesn't integrate with SMO for Windows. It only integrates with SMO for UNIX.
