SME 6.0.4 VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR

Setup:

DAG with 4 member servers. All running SME 6.0.4, Server 2008 R2, Exchange 2010 SP2. 3 out of the 4 servers backup fine. The forth server fails with this error:

Error in calling VSS API: Error code = 0x8004230f

Error description: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR

Event Logs log VSS Error 12292 and 13.

12292 - Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error creating the Shadow Copy Provider COM class with CLSID {819e04d3-809b-4657-aee0-778ca24470da} [0x80070424, The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

13 - Volume Shadow Copy Service information: The COM Server with CLSID {819e04d3-809b-4657-aee0-778ca24470da} and name HWPRV cannot be started. [0x80070424, The specified service does not exist as an installed service

All writers are present and showing as Stable.

This issue did NOT occur with 6.0.2 prior to update. After reverting back to 6.0.2 the issue remains and the backups fail.

All VSS related services are present (some set to Manual, but all are functioning correctly).

Backups fail when attempting to backup the server as part of the DAG backup as well as when backing up the server individually (single db/passive only/etc do not make a difference).

Any advise on how to address this issue?

Did you upgrade SnapDrive as well?  Make sure you have the Data ONTAP VSS Hardware Provider service and that it starts.  If not, then reinstall Snapdrive over the top and try again.

You are bang on the money! That service in fact was missing. Reinstalled the SnapDrive and now testing. Thanks for the help!
