SMO on Oracle VM virtual machine

Hi all,

I got a queston from a customer if SnapManager for Oracle is supported on an Oracle VM virtual machine. I looked through Interoperability matrix, as well as NOW and FieldPortal, but could not find concrete information.

VMWare and Hyper-V are mentioned in SMO install&admin guide, so I presume Oracle VM is possible too. What I would like to have is a more concrete info with limitations/possibilities.

Is there anyone with experience in implementing SMO on Oracle VM virtual machines? What disk configuration did you use (RDM, iSCSI, NFS)?

Thanks in advance,

Mladen

Mladen,

Currently only iSCSI and NFS are supported in Linux.  In windows, iSCSI and RDM's are supported.

These dependencies are based on what SnapDrive for UNIX/Windows supports.

No it is not.  The IMT does contain the references you are looking for.  Select your SMO configuration details based on the customer config and then check the applicable IMT Notes for the row that best matches your config.  You should see references to the supported virtualization environments.

A PVR may be an option.  The account team would need to make the necessary Product Management contacts in order to proceed on that approach.

Hi,

actually I have the same question than jessick and the IMT notes are not so clear.

For instance, I need to know if I can use SMO on VMWare ESX4 with vfms and/or RDM.

For VMWare, the SMO notes says:

SnapManager for Oracle (SMO) on Windows is supported on Guest OS only  for VMware ESX 3.5 Update2 for both iSCSI and FibreChannel. VMware ESX  3.5 Update 2 and later or ESXi 3.5 Update 2 and later is required to  support Windows 2003/2008 Guest OS (x86, x64) using RDM LUNs via FCP HBA  or iSCSI SW initiator from within the Guest OS. SMO on Windows is  supported on Guest OS only for MicroSoft Virtual Server2005R2 (SP1) for  ISCSI protocol. See the SnapDrive for Windows Support Matrix for  additional support details.

Does it means that Oracle on VMWare is not support with ESX 4 ?

Does it mean that it works only with RDMs ? Or can it work with VMFS as well ?

Thank you for any help ....

Hi Regis,

I would like to understand your requirement clearly first. Are you seeking SMO' s support on underlying SDU (Unix) or SDW (Windows)?

If it is Windows, then here are your answers:

1. Does it means that Oracle on VMWare is not support with ESX 4 ?

For Windows, I have already replied. For Unix, it works only with RDM's and not with VMFS.

Hope this helps.

Hi Piyush,

It's for SMO Windows.

I can't find your answer about Windows. Can you send me the URL ?

Answers to your questions:

Does it means that Oracle on VMWare is not support with ESX 4 ?

{Piyush} Yes.

Does it mean that it works only with RDMs ? Or can it work with VMFS as well ?

{Piyush} Since, the support is NOT there on Windows yet, there is no question of whether RDM or VMFS.

Hope it is answered now.

Thanks,

Piyush

Thank you Piyush.

Is it a matter of time? If so, do you know of an ETA ?

Would a PVR help ?

Hi,

are there any news about support of SMO in Windows guest OS with VMWare 4.x. Notes still show only VMWARE 3.5 (min. Update 2) as the only supported configuration.

Thanks.

HI Piyush,

has the situation changed since last november ?

The SMO 3.1 matrix still doesn't show ESX 4.0 (note 1281).

But the Snapdrive for Windows 6.3 matrix shows support for ESX 4.0 ?

Thank you
