Vmware Single File Restore

Hi Guys

Which Buttons do I have to check to enable Single File Restore for VMware Snapshots?

Wen't through the whole AdminGuide twice but couldn't find a proper answer to that simple question 😞

Thanks and Cheers

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

The VMware plugin handles restore itself. If you run a restore on a VMware config you will be able to do a restore which is app defined.

The plugin defined restore is the right way to go as it takes care of cleaning up 'VMware snapshots' created during backup.

VMware plugin doesn't have the functionality to restore files within a vm if that is what you are looking for.

If you want to do a file restore on a netapp snapshot taken by vmware plugin, you can do that by setting APP_DEFINED_RESTORE=N in your config, but that is neither supported nor advised.

Hi Arora

Single File Restore in this Case would mean Single VMDK- or Descriptor-File.

Last Tests always restored the whole Netapp-Snapshot, overwriting half a dozen VMs, which is not what we want.

To restore a particular VM you can create a copy your backup config and update the 'VIBE_VSPHERE_NAMES' parameter.

e.g.VIBE_VSPHERE_NAMES=VCENTER1::VM1

This will only restore VM1 and not the other VMs that were backed up as part of the backup.

You can also do this by using the add/override params checkbox on the restore screen and add the VIBE_VSPHERE_NAMES parameter to the list.

Hi Kapil

Sounds not very straight forward, intuitive and oriented on a daily operations.

I only had one Training for SC so far but we were able to list the snapped VMware Files like a “normal” CIFS Snap in SC-GUI and we could restore/replace single files that way.

Unfortunately we don’t have any good documentation on that, NetApp AdminGuides in this Area are horribly unstructured so far.

Would that be the result when setting APP_DEFINED_RESTORE to No or is there any other supported way to get that essential Feature done?

Basically I’d expect SnapCreator to cover the usually requested Restore-Tasks for VMware in GUI without the need of editing Configs and making unsupported changes.

Tasks include:

- Restore of a whole VM-Datacenter at once

- Restore of a whole Datatore at once

- Restore of a single VM

- Restore of single VM Disk-, Config- or Log-Files

Hope a future Release will Cover that, every other Backup-Software I encountered so far supports that out of the Box and straight forward.

You can do the following if you use SC:

- Restore of a whole VM-Datacenter at once

-           Restore of a whole Datatore at once

-           Restore of a single VM

What entities are backed up or restored is controlled by VIBE_VSPHERE_NAMES parameter of the config file.

You can open the config file in GUI and update this value in GUI itself and run restore.

You need not set APP_DEFINED_RESTORE=N to do the above three operations.

I am not sure if the fourth operation is possible through SC VIBE plugin i.e.  Restore of single VM Disk-, Config- or Log-Files

Thanks,

Kapil
