Backup and entire filer to tape

Quick question. Is there a way to initiate a backup of all the volumes on a filer to tape at once? I have an old FAS270 that I need to clear out, but would like to backup all the volumes to tape before I do so. I have done some looking around, and it seems both the "dump" and "snapmirror store" commands can only do one volume at a time. I cant use smtape because that's ONTAP 8+ only. I really don't want to have to sit through a volume-by-volume backup. I'm doing the dump directly from the filer to tape drive with no 3rd party software configured for the backup.

No, that’s not possible. Dump is always per-volume. Using external backup software it may be possible to query NetApp for existing volumes and automatically initiate backup for all of them - this is as close to “entire filer” as you can get. But if you are using dump on NetApp directly - you have to do it by volume.

Only other option, is it possible to script it with your backup software and create one script with all the volumes required and setup a job to run the backup to tape?

I am not sure I correctly understand your question. You can script it also without any external software, just create file with sequence of 'dump' commands and 'source' it. NetWorker allows you to specify 'All' as save set which dynamically queries existing volumes and initiates backup session for each of them.

Not really a question. Just a thought that it maybe easily to generate a script to add to a backup job, so it saves with the hassle of manually performing backups.

Thanks for the replies. I figure it's a good chance for me to look at scripting options for NetApp.
