FAS3140 / Ontap 8.2.4 7-mode / disk_fw_update with cf disable

Hi Community,

I have taken over a FAS3140 from another department. There were different Ontap versions installed so I installed 8.2.4 on both heads.

There is no cluster license. Only nfs. Therefor cf is disabled.

Is it possible to run a disk firmware update with cf disabled? If yes how can I do this?
I have searched this site, several documents but found nothing.

Best regards

Hi @all,

raid.background_disk_fw_update.enable and raid.disk.background_fw_update.raid4.enable are set to on.

Meanwhile I have a solution for my problem.

Additionally to cf disable I have set options cf.mode to non_ha.

I then got a message to remove the partner unit and reboot to get NVRAM normaly working.

As I only need one head I have removed the other had from the box. After reboot of the remaining head the firmware update is working. Even automatically Man Happy

Thanks for help.

Best regards

Yes, of course. Actually with default setup disk firmware update starts as soon as you copy new firmware to vol0.

Hi,

Refer https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1196990/html/GUID-27435825-BAB3-4594-A886-2BC8C1E21EDB.html to update disk firmware.

Hi @all,

thank you for the feedback.

I know that after a Ontap update/upgrade there is a process which is automatically start the firmware update.

But this is not working in my environment.

The system is recognizing that a firmware update of the disks is necessary but it is not working.

In the messages log I see

Fri Jul 22 08:00:00 GMT [netapp-01:disk.fw.downrevWarning:warning]: 13 disks have downrev firmware that you need to update.

When I enter the disk_fw_update command nothing happens.

The necessary firmware files are in the /etc/disk_fw directory.

Best regards

I guess HA interconnect error 19 has something to do with a mailbox disk. I have not found a documentation how to fix this.

Hi

What are the values of the options:

raid.background_disk_fw_update.enable

and

raid.disk.background_fw_update.raid4.enable

please?

If these are set to "off" then auto-updating won't happen.

Regards,

Richard.
