Is dump command backup volume snapshots as well?

Hi all!

I know that dump command take a snapshot of specified volume and send it to tape.

I red in "Tape backup and Recovery" Data ONTAP 7.3 that dump command backup "LUN and LUN clonse".

I use XenServer and create machines by snapshot feature.

So, the LUN appears after and a snapshoot of volume with BUSY status.

"Dump" command should backup these clonned luns and I'm wondering is snapshot too?

Thank you in advance.

dump will create a snapshot and back that up unless you specify an existing snapshot which it will use for the backup.

I know it but what about existing snapshots in .snapshot directory?

Will .snapshot directory be included in "dump snapshot"?

Only the snapshot it creates.. It will create and delete it after backup unless you specify a snapshot that already exists. It will not backup all snapshots unless you specify a separate backup for each snapshot.

That is extremely important!

In the restore case I would restore whole volume but no snapshots which would be backing by cloned LUN! That would be catastrophe.

Thank you for help!

There is no way to restore backups made by dump as snapshot. You will get full content. When you back up LUN, you get the full LUN back. You won’t need any backing snapshot because LUN won’t be clone anymore.
