Question about De-Dupe limitations and OnTap versions

Hello All,

I have received mixed answers to this question so I thought I would post it here to get some feedback.

I was told in the past that limitations on de-duplication are dependent on FAS platform not ONTAP version.

However based on page 19 of this guide

http://media.netapp.com/documents/tr-3505.pdf

It seems that it is dependent on ONTAP version and 7.3 has higher limits vs 7.2.

Can someone clear this up for me ? Is it a combination of both hardware and software limitations ?

Thanks

Yes, both hardware and ONTAP version are involved.

Generally, dedupe volume limits are based on the hardware.  However, changes in recent versions of ONTAP have resulted in the dedupe volume limits for certain units increasing as reflected in the chart for ONTAP 7.3.1+

Thank you Daniel,

Has there been anything published regarding 8.0 7G mode and deduplication limits  ? Does anything change from 7.3 ?

Hi,

It wasn't easy to find, but there you go:

http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/ontap/rel80rc2/pdfs/ontap/onlinebk.pdf

table on page 280

Limits look unchanged comparing to 7.3.2:

http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/ontap/rel732/html/ontap/onlinebk/GUID-2FD76C49-08CE-47BA-972D-E0F578DF6575.html

The documentation is about 8.0 RC2 though, so it can be a moving target.

Interestingly enough, no one was bothered to mention FAS2040 in 8.0RC2 limits and according to my best knowledge this box will run ONTAP 8 happily.

Radek
