From the CLI run:

filer> man disk assign

filer> man aggr add

You need to assign the disk to one of the controllers first. After it's assigned you can add it to an aggr or spare pool or whatever.

1. 'disk show -n' should show you all of the unassigned disks and their ID's.

2. 'sysconfig -a' will show you the controller serial numbers and controller ID's.

3. 'disk assign' will allow you to assign said disk to said controller ID.

4. 'disk assign all' from one of the nodes CLI will assign all remaining unassigned disks to that particular controller.

5. 'aggr status -r' OR 'sysconfig -r' will show you a breakdown of the raid groups and spare disks.

All of the commands above are for 7-mode and should be run without the quotes. If it's CDOT then the commands will differ slightly.

Hi Sunil,

If 'disk show -n' reports no results, then all of your disks are successfully assigned.

If you run the 'disk assign' command on node A then the disks you specified will be assigned to node A. You can check the disk and raid group configuration on node A by typing in the 'sysconfig -r' or 'aggr status -r' command on node A's CLI session.

If you run the 'disk assign' command on node B then the disks you specified will be assigned to node B. You can check the disk and raid group configuration on node B by typing in the 'sysconfig -r' or 'aggr status -r' command on node B's CLI session.

You can find more information on disk assignment via page 45 of the Storage Administration Guide for your specific version of ONTAP which 'sysconfig -a' was showing to be 7.3.3:

I'm afraid I do not understand your question.

You said, "it is also showing on node B."  What exactly are you referring to?

Rawat_Sunil
7,466 Views

I mean to say after completing the mentioned (earlier reference) stepas Unknown disk error has been flas out but the disk is represented in both the controller ( Ab and B)

You can view the disk from both controllers but the disk itself can only be owned by one controller.

If you run disk show -n and receive no results then all of the disks are successfully assigned. You can assign them however you like. The goal is to make sure they are assigned so that they can be used.

Dear RSG,

Thanks for your prompt responce.

It would be great if you will tell how we can find the ownership of particular disk ( earlier which was unowned)

disk show [ -o <ownername> | -s <sysid> | -n | -v | -a]

Used to display information about the ownership of the disks. Available only on systems with software-based disk ownership.

  • -o lists all disks owned by the filer with the name <ownername>.
  • -s lists all disks owned by the filer with the serial number <sysid>.
  • -n lists all unassigned disks.
  • -v lists all disks. -a lists all assigned disks.

I found the information above from the following guide:
