One of the downsides of LRC as compared to ESH was that one bad disk could cause the whole loop to fail, whereas ESH identifies bad disks and effectively bypasses them. If you intend to use your DS14 shelf for production data then I recommend purchasing some ESH modules, you should be able to pick them up pretty cheaply but just make sure you download the latest FW for them from NOW.

Hi,

You can find the answers to many of your questions at now.netapp.com .  The ESH module is a FC switching hub.  The rest is up to you to read up on first... or try to...

The ESH is is a shelf controller module for the DS14 disk shelves (which we've all but stopped selling).  Each shelf requires two modules. They came in ESH, ESH2 and ESH4 (1Gb/s, 2Gb/s, 4Gb/s).  The most recent versions of Data ONTAP only support ESH2 and ESH4 modules.  As Shaunjurr mentioned, they managed the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop and mediate I/O requests between the storage controller and the disk shelf.  You can think of them as network hubs for disk shelves.

A quick search of the NetApp Support website didn't turn up a document specifically for the ESH (it's considered a subcomponent, which rarely have separate documentation), but most of what you need to know is in the DS14 shelf guide.

Thanks for your answer!!

I want the connectivity diagram(how many disks are connected) between the disk and ESH module?

And also, what is need to have two modules in a shelf?

Of cours, all disks in the shelf are connected to the ESH module. Otherwise you couldn't access the disks. That's 14 disks. Also, you need 2 ESH modules for redundancy

Micheal.

Whether both the modules are in a active / active node?

Thanks in advance

What are you trying to do?  The shelves come with everything you need.  You just connect them to other shelves or to the storage controller following the procedures in this guide: https://now.netapp.com/NOW/public/knowledge/docs/hardware/filer/210-01431.pdf

Hi Michael,

I too have some questions on this topic. I am a NetApp newbie, and picked up a DS14 with dual X5501A LRC adapter to play with. What would I need to connect this to my system? And what the is the difference between LRC and ESH?

Appreciate the help in advance.

-John

LRC is out of support from hardware point of view and is not supported by Data ONTAP as of 7.3. You would need optical multimode cable; LRC side is SC, filer side is usually LC (I do not remember SC adapters). There were several different types of LRC modules – for direct connection to controller and for connection to another LRC. You need the former. You can’t mix LRC and ESH on the same loop.

Can anyone pls provide me the front and rear view of ESH module?

Thanks!!!

Hi,

There is really no front view to the ESH modules, as it’s a module that plugs into the controller.

As for the rear view, page 16 of the docs <https://now.netapp.com/NOW/public/knowledge/docs/hardware/filer/210-01431.pdf> provides that:

Ebay is a great source of info and pictures of old gear. http://cgi.ebay.com/NetApp-2x-2Gb-Optical-Copper-ESH-X5506A-DS14MK2-Module-/360366210388?pt=COMP_EN_Networking_Components&hash=item53e77ffd54#ht_1422w...

Note: NetApp does NOT provide any support or licenses for after-market or grey market gear so if you buy components from anyone but an authorized NetApp reseller, you are on your own.

"sysconfig -a" gives you information about what modules you have and what firmware these modules are on:

Guys I bought a used disk shelf mk2 for my lab.

I'm a VMware system administrator, so hopefully I can catch up with FC and SAN.

Can someone can explain how to use the ESH2 module to share the storage with 2 esxi hosts?

I can see two multinode SFP on the back of the netapp disk array one is labeled as 'IN' and the other as 'OUT'

I did a bit research on it but I need a starter kick to understand...

Do I need a fibre channel switch? What kind of?
