FAS2240A-4 Throughput

We are in phase of deciding for Netapp Filler Storage, price of FAS2240A-4 is impressive.

Now our requirement are as follows:

1.>Mainly files are GIS images from 2 Gb to 150 GB size each.

2.>Mainly we need NAS CIFS share, with windows desktop

3.>Reading/writing speed should be excellent

4.>100 TB usable capacity SATA (DS4243-0748-24A-SK-R5, 7.2K,SATA,IOM3,SK,R5)

5> Controller should be active/active (Redundant controller)

6.>2 TB SATA disk each

7.>Network bandwidth should be excellent

Now our questions are:

1.>Through-put , what would be the read & write speed ???

2.>I can see in my present system FAS 3140 in CIFS share, when I copy from local desktop hdd to CIFS share, transfer rate is

10 MBps sometime , do you think it is normal ?? then how much  read/write speed we can expect from FAS2240A-4 ?????

3.>is FAS2240A-4 is good for archive CIFS share data ???? (GIS Images)

Will it be good to have FAS2240A-4 for your setup ????

Hi,

It is a very tricky question in my opinion. The "theoretical" throughput of FAS2240 is phenomenal (just short of 2GB/s for sequential reads over NFS), but as they say - your mileage may vary & it is extremely unlikely IMHO you will ever get close to these kind of figures in a real-life implementation (especially when using CIFS).

In general, there are many gotchas: how is configured your CIFS client? what type of network are you using? are volumes fragmented (yes, it does make a difference for sequential reads)?

That being said, FAS2240 sound like a sensible choice in this scenario.

Regards,

Radek

Is there any answer for this ??????

I can see in my present system FAS 3140 in CIFS share, when I copy from local desktop hdd to CIFS share, transfer rate is

Well, I don't think is is "normal", but it may be due to a number of factors, either on the filer, or on the client side (or on the network?).

Actually FAS2240 may perform no worse (and no better) if dropped into the exactly same environment.

I'm worried seeing this:

what would be the normal transfer rate to FAS2240A-4 CIFS share  ????? from local hard-disk CIFS shared drive.
