If you haven’t read Mike Riley’s blog, have a read: http://blogs.netapp.com/efficiency/2011/03/next-big-thing-operational-efficiency.html

In the blog, there is one interesting point: the reason people have bought NetApp has always been due to lower cost due to some efficiency innovation.

To paraphrase some of the points in the blog, whether you use dedupe, thin provisioning and compression much of the infrastructure (servers, storage and network) will be virtualized, which will add another layer of complexity.  Regardless of how technology simplifies an environment, the businesses continues to drive the technology past existing limits.  The goal is to bring in someone with broad industry experience; someone that understands what has worked well elsewhere in that business vertical; assess the current customer environment and recommend a long-term solution.

What are your opinions on operational efficiency? Do you use tools like My AutoSupport and OnCommand? What results in efficiency are you seeing from using these tools?

Included in the blog there is a video on how you can understand how fit your IT is. Try it out here
