It all starts with Object Locking… Building a S3 storage ecosystem for critical backup applications

Alongside recovery time requirements, retention and immutability are critical components for any corporate backup strategy.

Last year, with StorageGRID 11.5, we introduced S3 Object Lock into the product. Applications could now apply immutability and protection at the object level to ensure objects could not be modified or deleted within a set retention period.

This was great news for our backup partners! Not only could we provide fast backup and recovery – we were now a WORM (write-once-read-many) storage location. Now all your backups belong to us! (if you know, you know 😉)

With the threat of ransomware on the rise, StorageGRID quickly certified S3 Object Locking with Veeam, Commvault, OpenText, and our own NetApp Cloud Backup to drive solutions to market.

With the latest StorageGRID release of 11.6, we expanded the S3 Object Lock API to allow for bucket level retention periods. This made it simpler to lock millions of objects and opened the door to partnering with Veritas Enterprise Vault.

StorageGRID was already a certified S3 storage location for Veritas Enterprise Vault. To re-validate us as a WORM storage location we went through a rigorous certification process involving basic functionality testing, S3 object lock testing, and performance testing (backup, recovery and deleting).

I am proud to say, we were one of the first object storage platforms to complete this certification.

The NetApp StorageGRID team will continue to work to enhance our S3 Object Lock capabilities. For example, governance mode could open our doors to service providers offering Backup-as-a-Service or S3-as-a-Service.
