Enhancements on Standard for Converged Data Center Storage Networks

The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) recently announced that the T11 Techncial Committee has completed work on the Fibre Channel Backbone - 6 (FC-BB-6) standard, providing a boost to deployments of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) converged storage networks.

While preserving full compatibility with the functionality defined in the FC-BB-5 standard, FC-BB-6 provides the following enhancements:

  • Support for VN2VN Connectivity - The VN2VN functionality enables the establishment of direct point-to-point virtual links between nodes in an FCoE network. This enables simpler configurations for smaller environments.  Zoning may be not needed in these network designs, resulting in lower complexity and cost.
  • Support for Domain_ID Scalability - With FC-BB-6, FCoE fabrics can use Domain_IDs more efficiently, which enables larger converged network SANs. FC-BB-6 fully defines how to support the deployment of the Distributed Switch architecture (currently in the final stages of development in the T11 FC-SW-6 working group) over Ethernet

The FC-BB-6 standard enhances the proven Fibre Channel protocol for converged data center storage networks.
