NetApp’s recent announcement on agile data infrastructure, has thinking about why this announcement is so momentous. How will NetApp help companies of all sizes become more agile and maintain their competitive advantage? One answer is data storage management software that enables IT infrastructure optimization. The foundation is NetApp’s Data ONTAP 8.1.1 with cluster-mode, and we build on this strength with our OnCommand management software portfolio of products. In fact, this past spring Gartner published their Magic Quadrant for Resource Management and SAN Management Software and named NetApp as a Leader based on the strength of our OnCommand management software portfolio.
What does it mean to be a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant? In addition to ticking all of boxes such as automatic discovery and storage information repository; provisioning and workflow automation; capacity management and planning; performance management and root cause analysis; and reporting for chargeback and showback – a Gartner Magic Quadrant leader must demonstrate “the highest combined measures of Ability to Execute and Complete”.
The OnCommand data storage management software portfolio is comprised of four distinct functional categories: Control, Automate, Analyze and Integrate. These four areas align with the areas defined by Gartner.
Where Gartner talks about element and device support, NetApp provides this with its OnCommand System Manager and OnCommand Report software – our Control category of products. System Manager is an easy-to-use, Web-based console that simplifies daily storage management tasks, while OnCommand Report provides a roll-up view of multiple instances on NetApp storage.
Gartner also calls out provisioning, quota management and workflow automation, and NetApp provides these capabilities with its OnCommand Unified Manager and Workflow Automation software – our Automate category of products.
Analytics and reporting provide tremendous value, not only to the IT organization, but to the whole business. Let’s start with performance management and root cause analysis. These capabilities are critical for maintaining high availability and high quality of service to internal and external customers. But when it comes to maintaining a competitive advantage, many businesses look to advanced IT infrastructure analytics to provide them with detailed cost and usage information to help with decision making at the IT level and at the C-level.
NetApp’s Analyze category of products includes OnCommand Balance and OnCommand Insight. Balance provides IT performance management and troubleshooting capabilities, while Insight provides configuration management and capacity planning. OnCommand Insight also has a data warehouse and flexible, enterprise reporting with role-based access – enabling multi-tenant reporting on costs and utilization for chargeback and showback analysis.
The fourth category in the OnCommand portfolio is Integrate. NetApp offers integration with IT Service Management (ITSM), and virtualization and IT management platforms via plug-ins, connectors, and a Software Developers Kit (SDK).
NetApp continues to invest in its OnCommand product portfolio, striving to maintain our positing as a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Storage Resource & SAN Management.
